This beautiful and rare gatefold LP from Philips (422 065-1, Dutch pressing, red/silver label, DDD stereo) features one of the great violin records of the digital era: Salvatore Accardo and I Solisti delle Settimane Internazionali di Napoli's magnificent recording of Vivadli's Four Sesons, as well as two additional concerti, all superbly recorded at Cremona in September 1987 (producer: Erik Smith / balance engineer: Hans Lauterslager / recording engineer: Roger de Schot). The exact contents are as follows, with contributing soloists noted below:

This album was recorded “live” at the 5th Annual Cremona Festival during the International Week of Chamber Music in Naples.

In the Four Seasons, Accardo makes a double homage: to Vivaldi and to Stradivarius, using four 'matched' violins, one per season:

"La Primavera" (Spring) features the 1715 Stradivari violin known as "Il Cremonese", once owned by Joseph Jochim, and now in the possession of the City of Cremona.
"L'estate" (Summer) features the 1727 Stradivari violin known as the "Ex-Raynier".
"L'autunno" (Autumn) features the 1718 Stradivari violin known as "Firebird".
"L'inverno" (Winter) features the ex Francescatti 1727 Stradivari violin known as the "Hart".

All three of these instruments are (or were at the time) owned by Accardo, who brings the particular qualities of each of the four instruments to full effect in these works (the above taken from Discogs).

The other contributing soloists incluced violists Alfonso Ghedin and Toby Hoffman, cellists Rocco Filippini and Peter Wiley, double-bassist Franco Petracchi, and last – but certainly not least, clavicembalist Bruno Canino, whose playing is particularly inventive and memorable.

This is exalted music-making, not to say violin playing, by any measure and all those who treasure the art of the violin will find this a truly remarkable album – stunning in every way.

There are superlative liner notes by Luca Tutino, provided in German, English, French, and italian. The striking cover photo is credited to Studio Art Photo di Boiocchi e Carboni, while the album art direction was supervised by Harman Bade.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is EXCELLENT. There is a minor bumping at corners and very light shelfwear, but that is all. There are no bends, seamsplits owners' markings, or other defects and the album remains solid, bright, glossy, and highly attractive – overall, an excellent collector's copy.

The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT. Though surfaces are not absolutely silent (and thus I have rated it NM vs. MINT), this is a fine copy and playback is superb. However, if you must have flawless surfaces, then please do not buy this LP – this is a lovely collector's copy.
