RecordCollector Magazine's/ GoldmineStandard Grading Guide:

"MINT: The record itself is in brandnewcondition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. Thecoverand any extra items such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are inperfectcondition. Records advertised as Sealed or Unplayed should be Mint.

Near Mint (NM or M-) :

A nearly perfectrecord. Many dealers won't give a grade higher than this implying (perhapscorrectly)that no record is ever truly perfect. The record should showno obvioussigns of wear. A 45 RPM or EP sleeve should have no more thanthe most minordefects, such as almost invisible ring wear or other signs ofslight handling. An LP cover should have no creases, folds, seam splits orother noticeablesimilar defects. No cut-out holes, either and of course, thesame should be trueof any other inserts, such as posters, lyric sleeves andthe like. An LP in nearmint condition looks as if you just got it home from anew record store andremoved the shrink wrap. Near Mint is the highest pricelisted in all Goldmineprice guides. Anything that exceeds this grade, in theopinion of both buyer andseller, is worth significantly more than the highestGoldmine book value.

EXCELLENT: The record shows some signs ofhaving been played, but there isvery little lessening in sound quality. Thecover and packaging might haveslight wear and / or creasing. In general, ifnot for a couple things wrong with it, this would be Near Mint.

Very Good Plus(VG+):

Generally worth 50% of the NearMint value. A Very Good Plus record willshow some signs that it was played andotherwise handled by a previous owner whotook good care of it. Record surfacesmay show some signs of wear and may haveslight scuffs or very light scratchesthat don't affect one's listening experiences.Slight warps that do not affectthe sound are "OK". The label may havesome ring wear ordiscoloration, but it should be barely noticeable. The centerhole will nothave been misshapen by repeated play. Picture sleeves and LP innersleeves willhave some slight wear, lightly turned up corners, or a slight seamsplit. An LPcover may have slight signs of wear also and may be marred by acut-out hole, indentation or corner indicating it was taken out of print andsold at adiscount.

VERY GOOD: Therecord has obviously beenplayed many times, but displays no majordeterioration in sound quality, despitenoticeable surface marks and theoccasional light scratch. Normal wear and tearon the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable

Good Plus(G+):

Generally worth10-15%of the Near Mint value. Good does not mean Bad! A record in Good or GoodPluscondition can be put onto a turntable and will play through withoutskipping. But it will have significant surface noise and scratches and visiblegroove wear(on a styrene record, the groove will be starting to turn white). Acover orsleeve will have seam splits, especially at the bottom or on thespine. Tape, writing, ring wear or other defects will start to overwhelm theobject.

GOOD: Therecord has been played somuch that the sound quality has noticeablydeteriorated, perhaps with somedistortion and mild scratches. The cover andcontents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discolouration, etc.

FAIR: Therecord is still justplayable but has not been cared for properly and displaysconsiderable surfacenoise; it may even jump. The cover and contents will betorn, stained and / ordefaced.

POOR: Therecord will not playproperly due to scratches, bad surface noise, etc. Thecover and contents willbe badly damaged or partly missing.

BAD: Therecord is unplayable ormight even be broken, and is only of use as acollection filler."
