Cole Porter strung the pearls of his songs over four decades. The interpretative genius of such as Artie Shaw, David Rose and Tommy Dorsey are among those who have provided settings that ensure Porter’s delicious creations will be treasured for as long as music sings.

And the sumptuous array of Porter melodies that grace this album are among all the magnificent collection adorning the soundtrack of ‘Evil Under The Sun’, a movie with the combined talents of Porter, Christie and Ustinov in dazzling array. Agatha Christie, who wrote the original (one of her many all-time best-sellers), spun mysteries as deftly as Porter wove melodies.

Now, the film-producing team of Brabourne and Goodwin have proved (with ‘Murder on the Orient Express’, ‘Death on the Nile’, ‘The Mirror Crack’d’ and the current production) that they can mint Christie anew as elegant and glamorous movies, particularly when in tandem with such stylish acting as that of a Peter Ustinov, the directorial expertise of a Guy Hamilton and the screenwriting facility of an Anthony Schaffer.

Sir Hugh Casson, elected president of the Royal Academy in 1976, has been a vital influence on the whole world of art in Britain since the 1940s. ‘Evil Under The Sun’ is asparkle from the opening credit titles, which unfold against a delightful series of his watercolour beachscapes, two of which enhance this album, displaying a skill with colour to match the wit and chic of the musical delights within.
