Description
Red label with silver text, deep groove, mono. The is a concert recorded on November 7, 1955 at the Pythian Temple in NYC. Introduction to the tunes with some commentary by Al Collins. 2 tracks with Larry Sonn and His Orchestra. Larry Sonn, Jack Hanson, Abbey Hoeffer, Al Maiorca, Jimmy Nottingham, trumpets; Hal McKusick, Rick Henry, alto sax; Frank Socolow, Bernie Box, tenor sax; Danny Bank, baritone sax; Jimmy Norton, guitar; Fred Zito, Bob Ascher, Sid Harris, Mort Troutman, trombones; Fern Falcon, piano Roy Shane, bass; Maurice Marks, drums; George Devens, vibes. 3 tracks with Gene Quill, alto sax and His Quartet with Dick Sherman, trumpet; Sadik Hakim (Argonne Thornton) piano; Buddy Jones, bass; Sol Gubin, drums. On Side 2, 1 track with Don Elliot, vibes; Hank Jones, piano; Wendell Marshall, bass; Shadow Wilson, drums. 1 track with Coleman Hawkins, tenor sax; 1 track with Coleman Hawkins with same rhythm section that accompanied Don Elliot. 1 track, not listed in the notes, with Tony Fruscella, trumpet. Most likely he is playing with the same rhythm section. Narration and comments by Al Collins before the tunes.
Cover: VG+ 2" split on the top edge at the insert edge. Light overall aging. Fine condition.
Record: VG++ to Mint(-) Visually shows no wear. No markings on the vinyl surface. There are a few clicks during Collins introductions to all tunes. These are faint, most barely audible. On Side 1, Track 1 & 4 , 1 light click on each track. On Side B, Track 1, 2 or 3 faint clicks on the first 1 or 2 revolutions. Elliot plays in the style of 4 different vibe player ( Milt Jackson, Hampton, etc). This tune is entitled "Impressions". On Track 2, 5 light clicks during Hawkins unaccompanied solo. On Track 3, 1 faint click near the beginning of the Track, barely audible, followed by 1 more audible click during Hawkins' solo, 2 light clicks during Jones' piano solo. Hawkins' solos again with 3 or 4 faint clicks and 2 more audible clicks. No surface noise on Track 4. The noise is slight and I have graded conservatively. Audibly checked.
