Blending the perfect balance of hard rock, pop, and lyrical/sonic kookiness, Alice Cooper's second long-player, Easy Action, is a lost classic. Operating as a full group, as opposed to the over-the-top showman of later years, Alice Cooper's blend of post-psychedelic proto-metal on Easy Action precipitates the run of classic albums from Love It To Death through Billion Dollar Babies for which the band is mostly remembered. While not as well-known as those recordings, Easy Action finds the band discovering their abilities and is full of hook-laden songs such as 'Mr and Misdemeanor' and the Beatles-like 'Shoe Salesman'. Sitting comfortably next to these more accessible tunes are the wild freak-out numbers "Lay Down and Die, Goodbye' and 'Return of the Spiders'. This melding of polar extremes and the rejection of any recognizable formula is what lends Easy Action its charm and makes it such an enjoyable listen. Much of the album combines all the best elements of early Alice including gritty vocals, crunchy dual guitar interplay, and a rock solid/inventive rhythm section. Hard rock is certainly front and center, but there is an experimental streak running through Easy Action. The band refuse to play it straight and as a result the music is strange and unpredictable- hard rock with more than a twist. Establishing the blueprint for much of the hard/glam rock that would follow in the 1970s, Easy Action captures Alice Cooper as a band discovering themselves as true originals recording some of the most unique and influential music in the annals of rock and roll.
