Cover: ex+ Ultra rare and highly recommended lp with 2 brilliant early microtonal compositions (plus 2 non-microtonal works) by this underappreciated pioneer. Haba beautifully explores alien sound worlds using his own notation system for his works in quarter-tones and sixth-tones, dividing the octave into exponentially more notes than the traditional western 12-note scale. The performers are the Czech Nonet and the Novak Quartet. Includes insert booklet.

Czech innovator Alois Haba studied under Vitezslav Novak and Franz Schrecker and was one of the earliest Western microtonal composers, writing his first quarter tone composition in 1917. He was influenced by folk music, worked with Ivan Wyschnegradsky, and helped develop many new instruments including quarter tone pianos, harmoniums, guitars, clarinets, and trumpets, and a sixth tone harmonium. Haba's work is one of the earliest and most important contributions to the modern microtonal music tradition of Julian Carrillo, Harry Partch, Ferruccio Busoni, Henk Badings, Lou Harrison, La Monte Young, Ben Johnston, Glenn Branca, Terry Riley, Charles Ives, John Eaton, James Tenney, Easley Blackwood, Emil Richards, Teo Macero, Tony Conrad, Rhys Chatham, Pauline Oliveros, Alvin Lucier, Joe Maneri, etc. Check out my other auctions this week for more avant garde, experimental, early electronic, electroacoustic, synthesizer, free improv, 20th century classical, microtonal, space-age pop, psych, weird spoken word, field recordings, and sound effects records. For used lps, I remove the lp and inserts from the jacket, cover it in a layer of bubble wrap, and then reinforce it with a cardboard insert. All records are shipped with poly plastic sleeves.
