Description: This essential LP release includes Amos Milburn’s complete 1957 LP Let’s Have a Party. (Originally released on the Aladdin Records subsidiary Score, it has been long unavailable on vinyl.) A celebrated album among R&B and blues aficionados of that era, it contained a magnificent selection of Amos’ previous recordings for the label. Highlights include a second version of Amos’ biggest hit “Chicken Shack Boogie” (which was originally recorded in November 1947). This high-powered 1956 reading of the tune was cut in New Orleans with some of the most important musicians of the Crescent City music scene, such as Lee Allen, Alvin “Red” Tyler, Justin Adams, and Earl Palmer. (It was basically the same band featured on classic recordings by Fats Domino, Little Richard, and Larry Williams, to name a few.) The song celebrates the unique pleasures of Amos Milburn’s favorite juke joints back in Houston (and may refer specifically to a Central Avenue nightspot called Ivy’s Chicken Shack). A number of the pianist’s finest recordings have also been included here, such as “Let’s Have a Party,” “Rocky Mountain,” “All Is Well,” the bluesy “I’m Still a Fool for You,” and the splendid ballads “I Know You Love Me,” and “Baby, Baby, All the Time,” among others. The track listing also contains two of Milburn’s most celebrated drinking songs: “Good, Good Whiskey” (a 1953 re-make of his smash “Bad, Bad Whiskey”), and the iconic “One Scotch, One Bourbon, One Beer.” In addition to the original album, this limited collector’s edition presents 4 bonus tracks: two more classic upbeat romps about booze and its effects, “Vicious, Vicious Vodka” and “Let Me Home, Whiskey,” plus the seminal “Down the Road Apiece,” and the joyful “Every Day of the Week.”
