Andrew Jackson Jihad is an American folk punk band from Phoenix, Arizona formed in 2004.
History
Andrew Jackson Jihad was formed after its original drummer, Justin James White, approached Sean Bonnette and Ben Gallaty, who had just left Rodan (not the Rodan of Kentucky fame) and The Sub-Standards. Since then, many significant Arizona musicians have sat in with the remaining duo of Sean and Ben, including John de la Cruz of Fatigo and Asleep In The Sea's Owen Evans. Dylan Cook of Partners In 818 also plays mandolin regularly with the band. The constantly shifting lineup results in wide-ranging sonic textures both live and on record. Many of their lyrics are overtly political in nature.
Andrew Jackson Jihad has obtained much coverage for their songs about "serial killers, cigarettes, child abuse, and a vengeful Jesus". They were also the subject of controversy in HeartattaCk issue #49 regarding their song "I Love You," which is narrated by a character who "smoke[s] crystal meth" and "laugh[s] at retards,".
On April 15, 2006, the band played as part of the 2006 New Times Music Showcase, nominated for Best Americana Band, and won a Best of Phoenix award later that year.
Besides their local shows, where they have become arguably the most prominent representative in Arizona of the DIY ethic, they have also toured in clubs and basements across the Western United States, appearing at such venues as the Knitting Factory in Los Angeles, CA. One show in Kimberly, Idaho saw the band in a cowboy bar.
They released a split with Ghost Mice on Plan-It-X-Records in 2007. Following this, Asian Man Records issued their first full-length album on September 11, 2007.
It had been rumored that the duo's song "Guilt: the song" was used to promote the new Michael Moore film Capitalism: A Love Story, but that was not the case; the rumor was due to either an error or a fabrication.
Cobra Skulls are a punk rock band from Reno, Nevada who are signed to Fat Wreck Chords.
History
Cobra Skulls were formed in Reno, NV in 2005 by Devin Peralta (bass, vocals), Charlie Parker (guitar) and Chad Cleveland (drums). They released an EP titled Draw Muhammad in 2006. The EP caught the attention of Red Scare Industries who signed the band and released their debut album Sitting Army in 2007. They released a 7" titled Never Be a Machine in 2008.
To promote the album the band went on tour with Against Me!, Mad Caddies, and The Loved Ones, opening shows for them. During the 2007 tour the band added a second guitarist Adam Beck.
On August 20, 2008, the band announced they had parted ways with guitarist Charlie Parker.
Their second album American Rubicon was released in 2009. Leading up to its release the band participated in the Old Skars and Upstarts Tour with Anti-Nowhere League and Duane Peters. Followed by a west coast tour opening for The Lawrence Arms and Teenage Bottlerocket.
The band signed with Fat Wreck Chords in March 2010. Around this time Chad Cleveland left the band and was replaced by former Only Crime drummer Luke Ray.
On August 3, 2010, the band announced on their MySpace blog page that they were recording a new five-song EP in the Fat Wreck studio, set to be released "....eh, well, hopefully by the time we see you all at Fest!"
On September 30, 2010, they released a cover of "Give you Nothing" by Bad Religion on their MySpace, featuring Fat Mike of NOFX for the Bad Religion tribute album "Germs Of Perfection."
Music style
Devin Peralta is half Argentinian and sings some songs in Spanish as can be heard with the tracks "¡Hasta Los Cobra Skulls Siempre!" (from Draw Muhammad EP) and "Use Your Cobra Skulls" (from Sitting Army LP). While the first track is sung completely in Spanish, the latter track mixes both English and Spanish (not to be confused with Spanglish). "Thicker Than Water" (from American Rubicon LP) also contains lyrics in Spanish.
