About the First Record  Up for Auction: “MAGAZINE,” (The  Unauthorized 1977 Version, Domestic), by HEART.

This is a genuine domestic version of the original mix of the album Magazine by the band Heart, issued by Mushroom  Records, but without the cooperation, and over the objection of, the members  of Heart. This is NOT a bootleg recording. The record itself  has no marks or scratches, and is in near-mint, if not mint condition! The  front of the record jacket is in near-mint condition, with no color worn off to  ring wear. The reverse side of the jacket has a few areas of light abrasion,  especially the upper left and lower right corners, and to the left of the Mushroom  Records logo (see photos). All the photos here are of the actual item for sale,and are not stock photos (send me a message to see additional photos).  

I am only selling this copy because I already have a domestic and import version of this album in my collection.

About the Second Record  Up for Auction: The Very Rare Canadian Import LP “MORNING,” by the band Bordersong (1975, Real Good Records), Featuring  ANN & NANCY WILSON’s backing vocals on the song It’s Time Again.

This very  rare 1975 Canadian import was released on Real Good Records, and features guest backing vocals by  ANN & NANCY WILSON of Heart on the song “It’s Time Again.”  This album came out the year prior to the  release of “Dreamboat Annie” in the USA. The credits on the back of the record jacket note that “Ann and  Nancy Wilson appear courtesy of Mushroom Records” (which is probably the first and only  instance of the word “courtesy” being used in relation to Ann & Nancy Wilson and Mushroom Records, as the Wilson sisters' dealings with Mushroom soon took on the form of a mushroom cloud). Real Good Records catalog number 1001A. Please  note: Ann & Nancy appear on just the one song on this album, providing background, not lead, vocals. This is a real Heart obscurity, and is a must for any Heart collector. I am only selling this one because I already have a copy in my collection.

The record itself is in  nice shape, with only a couple of very faint marks, but no scratches. The vinyl  does have a slightly mottled or fogged appearance in areas on both sides, but as you can see from the photos, it's not something that is glaringly obvious. I have not  played this record because my stylus needs to be changed, and it is being sold as-is. Three of the corners  of the record jacket have some minor issues, see photos for details (send me a message for additional photos).

ADDITIONAL GENERAL  INFORMATION ABOUT “MAGAZINE,” THE 1977 UNAUTHORIZED VERSION

This version of “Magazine”was released by Mushroom Records in 1977, while the record company was in the  middle of a lawsuit with Heart, who had left the label to sign with Portrait.The not-so-nice people at Mushroom took five demos with scratch vocals by Ann  Wilson, and hired studio musicians to complete the songs. To fill out the  album, Mushroom added two live club recordings, and Here Song,the B-side to a previously-released Canadian 45 rpm single for How Deep  It Goes, and the album Magazine, was born, although without  the cooperation or approval of Heart. About 50,000 copies of the album were  pressed, but the band successfully sued and obtained a court order to have  all unsold copies withdrawn and DESTROYED! Only some of thosealbums survived. THIS IS ONE OF THEM, AND YOU CAN ADD IT TO YOUR COLLECTION  IF YOU PLACE A BID ON IT!

THIS IS NOT THE  VERSION OF  "MAGAZINE" YOU HAVE MOST LIKELY HEARD. THIS IS THE VERSION  HEART NEVER WANTED YOU TO HEAR!

Also, as part of the  resolution of the lawsuit, Heart was required to provide a second album to  Mushroom Records, which eventually resulted in the official,1978 version of Magazine.The official version differs greatly from this unauthorized version. The most  obvious difference is that the songs on the unauthorized version of the LP arein a difference sequence than the official version. As for the individual  songs, the only song that is identical on both versions of the album is the  brief Here Song, originally a B-side on a 45-RPM single released by  Mushroom Records in Canada in 1975. The demos that comprise the unauthorized  version contain scratch vocals that were never intended for release when Ann  sang them. But in addition to the vocals being more fully realized in the  official version, there are changes to some of the lyrics in the in-studio  songs as well. This is very obvious in the case of Heartless, where  Ann sings “The doc said come back again next week…” in the original mix, while  she sings “The doctor said…” in the official version. Another obvious  difference in the unauthorized version appears in Devil Delight,where Ann sings a series of “oooh yeahs” close to the end of the song that were  not used in the official version.

LISTENING TO THE  DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THIS VERSION AND THE COMMERCIAL VERSION OF"MAGAZINE" WILL GIVE YOU INSIGHT AS TO HEART'S CREATIVE PROCESS, ANDTHE IMPORTANCE OF THE CHOICES MADE WHEN RECORDING AND MIXING AN ALBUM!

Some differences in the  title track (indicated in italics) include Ann singing “Princess all dressed  in wool, dreaming eyes, holding a sweet rhyme…,” as well as  “Rain sings my song today…,” “She says I can’t  wait much more for you…” “Over across town, caught in a crowd, lord still  living alone…,” “A little bit of something to take away her pain…”and  especially “Kissing the photograph at night are the lovers of sand through  her hands hold onto him so tight…,” as well as many more in that one song  alone.

This description does  not even begin to list all the differences between the unauthorized andofficial versions of Magazine. The live songs were also edited  differently, so they are not completely the same either. Also, the live songs  are  presented as one track in the unauthorized version while they are separate  tracks in the official version of the album.

THE MUSHROOM RECORDS'  DISCLAIMER ON THE REVERSE OF THE ALBUM COVER

A very noticeable  difference between the album covers appears on the back of the unauthorized  version’s LP jacket. Mushroom Records included the following disclaimer on the  LP cover, which states: “Mushroom Records regrets that a contractual dispute  has made it necessary to complete this record without the cooperation or endorsement  of the group Heart, who have expressly disclaimed artistic involvement in  completing this record. We did not feel that a contractual dispute should  prevent the public from hearing and enjoying these incredible tunes and  recordings.”

If you are a Heart completest, or if you haveone in your life, YOU HAVE TO HAVE THIS ALBUM IN YOUR COLLECTION! If nothing else, listening to these two very different  versions of the same album show how creative choices made by an artist (and/or  a record producer) can completely change the feel and emotional response to asong.
