This handsome LP from Spanish Decca (SXL 2188, Spanish pressing, black/silver WB grooved label – ED1, heavy vinyl*, stereo, original inner sleeve included) features Ernest Ansermet and L'Orchestra da la Suisse Romande's glittering and atmospheric accounts of Stravinsky's Pulcinella Suite and Le chant du rossignol, both recorded in the fabled acoustics of Victoria Hall, Geneva, in May 1956.

Note: The vinyl is very heavy, perhaps 220 g.

Ansermet had a particularly fine grasp of The Song of the Nightingale and it has rarely sounded so magically evocative as here. The Suite to Pulcinella is no less fine – superb!

Arguably among the high-water marks in Ansermet's discography, these readings boast the remarkable Decca engineering that bested all its rivals at this time. Ansermet was among Stravinsky's most insightful exponents, and his interpretations carry an authority and feeling few have matched, with the OSR on truly brilliant form throughout – remarkable recordings.

This album was produced by Victor Olof and engineered by James Brown.

There are fine liner notes (uncredited) on the reverse side of the jacket, printed in Spanish only. The striking cover art is similarly uncredited, alas.

CONDITION – PLEASE READ VERY CAREFULLY:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is VERY GOOD. There is edgwear, more so at corners, as well as aging, shelfwear, and mild discoloration. However, there are no seamsplits, bends, owners' markings, or other defects and the album and remains solid, bright, and highly attractive – overall, a very good collector's copy.

The condition of the LP itself is EXCELLENT. Visually, there are light marks and faint spindle trails. In terms of sound, though there is occasional light surface noise, in general the playback remains quite fine. However, if you must have a flawless or NM copy, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, this rates as an excellent collector's copy.
