ITEM DESCRIPTION:

This handsome LP from Decca (SXL 2292, UK pressing, black/silver label, WBg ED1 "Original Recording By", stereo) features Ernest Ansermet and the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande in a captivating all-Russian music program:

Note the striking artwork, here executed by Al Larusso, which was always an added attraction of Decca's Ansermet/OSR issues.

Included are the following works, all taped in the fabled acoustics of Victoria Hall, Geneva in 1961.

Prokofiev: Symphony No. 1 in D Major  Op. 25 'Classique'

Prokofiev: March, from The Love for Three Oranges

Glinka: Kamarinskaya Fantasie

Glinka: Overture, from A Life for the Tsar

Borodin: In the Steppes of Central Asia

So many endless apologies are made for the supposed short-comings of the Suisse Romande Orchestra that a critical bias has nearly rendered their every Decca recording an also-ran.  These ‘faults’ have been exaggerated, and how well they play against the Chicago Symphony Orchestra is less important than how well they play Bartok.  And they play this music superbly, and for this listener at least, Ansermet’s Concerto for Orchestra is among the finest ever recorded, so rich in telling detail and atmosphere.

CONDITION – PLEASE READ CAREFULLY:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is VERY GOOD. There is minor bumping/wear at corners and some shelf wear, as well as general aging and discoloration. However, there are no bends, seam splits, owners’ markings, or other defects, and the album remains solid, bright, and highly attractive – overall, a very good collector's

The condition of the LP is EXCELLENT. Visually, there are hairline marks. The labels show some spindle trails, but are otherwise clean. In terms of sound, the opening grooves have a bit of surface noise, but then it quiets to NM sound. If you must have flawless surfaces, then please do not buy this LP - overall, this rates as an excellent collector's copy.
