Wooden Pyrography Box of Records

Great pyrography record box holding 21 Little Wonders records.

Box Description:  Wooden record box intensively decorated with pyrographic designs (pyromania). The pyrography work is really good and really different. Inside are wooden slot guides for holding records. Opening from the top on hinges.  Pyrography reached its heyday from about  1890 thru  1915. Pyrography is using a hot tool to burn a design on a piece of wood. Introduct to America in the mid 1800's. It became popular when several companies began offering items with designs stamped on them for burning around the turn of the century. The Flemish Art Company of New York was the largest producer of pyrography products, and the term Flemish Art has become synonymous with burnt wood pieces of that era. Pyromania is the name that was given to the design-intense work in which every space was textured, shaded or outlined in burning.  

Records desription: 21 records from the "Little Wonders" line are included inside the box. Little Wonders records were made from 1914 thru 1923. The recordings and the disks weren't of the highest quality, but they were revolutionary at the time because they made recorded music widely available at a price that every-day people could afford. They were usually shortened versions of popular or familiar tunes. Many were cut by famous artists of the day, however, none of the artists names are attributed on the record labels. The records were numbered sequentially by the issue date. The earlier records didn't have labels, just impressions and incisions on the record. Here is a list of the records in the box:

Some of them have labels and some of them are earlier numbers.

 Dimensions: All the Little Wonders records were 5.5" in diameter. The record box is 5.5" X 6" X 6".

Condition: I've played a number of the records and they aren't in too bad of condition. They didn't come with sleeves, but the material seems to be quite durable. So, while there are some nicks and scratches, it doesn't seem to have done them too much harm. The box has some long parallel scratches on the top of the lid, and the anchoring nails that the hinges swing on have come out. The hinges are fine, though there is a wood sliver that has come off in what might be the nail path on the back (see pic). There is also a record slot that is broken off. It is still there inside the box, and could probably be glued back on. Some of the inner surfaces are textured but don't look as "burned" as the rest of the wood. the bottom inside panel where the records sit is textured differently and doesn't look burnt at all (see pics).

Since the box seems to have been made for the dimensions of these specific records, I date it at sometime between 1914 and 1923. The records were sold through places like Sears, so it is possible that the box was also, but I have not been able to find it in any ad or catalog.

Unless noted otherwise,  items are vintage and pre-owned and will show normal signs of handling and use. I try to describe and photograph items thoroughly.
