redgarnett Store ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This beautiful much sought-after LP from Decca (SXL 2009, English pressing, black/silver WBg label – ED1, stereo, original inner sleeve included) features Ataúlfo Argenta’s famous account of Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique Op. 14, recorded with the l'Orchestra de la Société des Concerts du Conservatoire at the Maison de la Mutualité, Paris, during 6-8 November 1957 (producer: John Culshaw / engineers: Kenneth Wilkinson and Ken Cress).
The recording has always carried the air of legend about it, owing in part perhaps to Argenta’s tragic early death only 2 months later, but mostly deriving from the undeniable stature of the performance, marrying fantasy and grotesquerie in equal measure, the Paris Conservaitore Orchestra on brilliant form, captured in wide-ranging demonstration sound.

This LP won the prestigious 1958 Grand Prix du Disque · Academie Charles Cros. There are fine liner notes (uncredited) on the reverse side of the jacket, printed in English only. The remarkable cover art is similarly uncredited, alas.
CONDITION – PLEASE READ VERY CAREFULLY:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is GOOD+. There is bumping/wear at corners, several small nicks along the edges, light creasing, and discoloration, more so to the rear panel, but that is all. There are no seamsplits, bends, or owners' markings, and the whole remains solid, bright, glossy, and highly attractive – overall, a good collector's copy.
The condition of the LP itself is VERY GOOD+. There is a small pressing bubble near the beginning of Side 1 that causes a soft bumping noise for about 20 revolutions (less than a minute). Elsewhere, although there is surface noise, playback is quite fine, with big, bold, detailed sound. Those requiring a flawless or near-MINT copy are advised to look elsewhere. Overall, this is very good collector's copy (to me, the sound is tremendous). However, if you cannot live with the sonic blemishes described above, then please do not buy this LP.
