Now this l.p. is a true gem. It's titled Arizona Dranes 1926 - 1928 Barrel House Piano With Sanctified Singing on the Heroin label. I'm not sure what year this was issued but it contains recordings from her original 78's. Two songs are unissued. I believe that Arizona's real name was Juanita. She was known as The Anointed Arizona Dranes. Her songs are truly amazing to hear & thank the Lord that they have been brought to the public for all to hear. Even today though, Arizona is still unknown. I will tell you this though; after hearing these songs, you'll never forget her. PLEASE read some of the information that I found about her. Look below for that info. & for links to hear Arizona sing & play piano. The cover of this l.p. is VG+. The vinyl looks to be in excellent condition. I played some & could hear some background crackle. I believe that it's due to the condition of the original 78's that they recorded the songs from. None were found to be in really good condition & they are extremely rare.

Arizona Dranes (1891?–1963) was one of the first gospel artists to bring the musical styles of Holiness churches' religious music to the public in her records for Okeh and performances in the 1920s. She introduced piano accompaniment to Holiness music, which had previously been largely a cappella, and accompanied herself in the barrelhouse and ragtime styles popular at the time. She is believed to be of both African-American and Mexican descent.

New evidence shows that Arizona Dranes, the blind Pentecostal piano player who inspired everyone from Mahalia Jackson to Jerry Lee Lewis, attended the Institute for Deaf, Dumb and Blind Colored Youths at 4104 Bull Creek Road from 1896 until graduating in 1910. Let that sink in for a sec: The first person to ever play piano on a gospel record, the musician Sister Rosetta Tharpe credited with influencing her raucous, syncopated style, learned how to play in Austin. Dranes remains virtually unknown today, with only a single blurry photo ever found, but she's celebrated by prewar gospel and blues enthusiasts. "Arizona Dranes is the most important performer for introducing 'hot' piano style to African American gospel music," says Grammy-winning music historian David Evans. The first musical star of the Church of God in Christ, a Memphis-based Pentecostal sect that emphasized foot-stomping music in the styles of secular music, Dranes and her lost-in-the-spirit outbursts laid the blueprint for rock 'n' roll.

At the time, most gospel performances were vocal only or accompanied by guitar, but Dranes stood out with her Holy Ghost-fueled piano. Arizona Dranes was the full package, with a voice that quivered with emotion. The Depression decimated demand for gritty gospel-blues, but Dranes remained a star on the Church of God in Christ circuit, where she often performed before church founder Bishop Charles Mason.
