Backgammon is an album by drummer Art Blakeyand The Jazz Messengers recorded in 1976 and released on the Roulette label
Taking the album’s title from the game of Backgammon that for some reason was sweeping the world during the 1970s, and had much in common with jazz, as there were rules and strategy, though there was also an element of chance, with that chance meaning that tables could be turned on a single roll, and then back again just as quickly. Regardless, critics were never fond of Backgammon, often rating it as middle of the road or less, though I for one find it to be a singular album in many respects, and while certainly not defining of the career of Art Blakey, certainly not to be disregarded with an offhanded wave.
As to which formate is sonically best, the Warner Japan remaster on CD is outstanding, though as far as I’m concerned, there’s not much that can beat hearing this gem as the original Roulette vinyl edition … there is just something about jazz from this period of time that requires a turntable, and the commitment to the listening.
*** The Fun Facts: It’s often been quoted that Blakey made his move from piano to drums at gunpoint in the early 1930’s by an irate club owner, but take that with a grain of salt, as Blakey has created a very colourful life for himself as far as story telling goes.
It’s also worthwhile noting here that the 60’s psychedelic rock band Quicksilver Messenger Service took their name from Blakey’s band the Jazz Messengers. and track Quicksilver
