Description

Artie Shaw "Plays An Album of Popular Music"  Bluebird BP1

Described elsewhere as Shaw's first album.  August 1940 is handwritten inside the cover next to a name in pencil.  Delaunay lists all these tracks as coming from a January 1939 session, so this seems to date from 1939 or 1940.  Interesting cultural artifact as the Bluebird marketing team tries to emphasize 10 "Pop" composers of the day with head shots on the cover -- many balding.  Sigmond Romberg?  Rudolf Friml?  Franz Lehar?  All in coats and ties and collectively looking like the Board of Directors for a bank.  Won't see this approach on a Justin Bieber release.  Shaw of course would play a role in this transformation of "pop" culture.

Five 78s.  Condition of records is VG++  There are a few light scuffs, but no heavy scratches, no cracks, no chips, and no spindle marks.  All discs play with background noise but music dominates.  They are above average condition for 78s, but have not stored on a velvet pillow inside a vault since 1940.  Hard to come by in any condition.

Cover is VG.  Cloth end spine has detached but is included.  Back and front show minor signs of age with rub marks.  No marks (other than inscription inside cover noted above and tiny red scuff on lower front).  Inside paper sleeves all well attached and the sleeve bottoms fully intact.  See photos.

Delaunay lists Buddy Rich as drummer.  Helen Forrest sings on 2 sides, Tony Pastor sings on 1.  Track info below.
