Unlike a 'normal' LP the needle is put down at the lead-out groove and moves outwards. Behind this apparent gag is nothing other than the wish to achieve the very best sound possible with the general awareness that music often begins softly and ends loudly. A great pity that this phenomenon is not taken into account when employing the usual cutting technique, for the further the pick-up arm moves towards the center, the more information has to be stored per groove centimeter with a constant revolution speed. The result: with an increasing level of sound the high notes tend to suffer from distortion.

Anders als bei einer „normalen“ LP wird die Nadel an der Auslaufrille aufgesetzt und bewegt sich nach außen. Hinter diesem scheinbaren Gag verbirgt sich nichts anderes als der Wunsch, den bestmöglichen Klang zu erreichen, mit dem allgemeinen Bewusstsein, dass Musik oft leise beginnt und laut endet. Schade, dass dieses Phänomen bei der üblichen Schnitttechnik nicht berücksichtigt wird, denn je weiter sich der Tonarm in Richtung Zentrum bewegt, desto mehr Informationen müssen pro Rillenzentimeter bei konstanter Umdrehungsgeschwindigkeit gespeichert werden. Die Folge: Mit zunehmendem Schallpegel neigen die hohen Töne zu Verzerrungen.

Top 40 Best Sounding Recordings: Classical pieces like Ravel's Bolero and La Valse that start softly and grow to a fortissimo conclusion - and they are legion - are a problem for mastering engineers. The problem is inherent in the LP's design: more sonic information (a consequence of the louder music's greater dynamic range) has to be squeezed into the shorter and more tightly curved grooves toward the center of the disc. The resulting distortion and compression degrade the sound just as the music climaxes. In response to this design flaw Tacet Records has recently issued two Ravel showpieces in vibrant readings by the Netherlands Philharmonic under Carlo Rizzi on a new LP (whimsically titled oreloB) that plays 'backwards': you put the stylus on LP's inner run-out groove and the music begins. As the stylus travels outwards from the center, the ever-growing volume of the music corresponds perfectly to the longer and less tightly curved grooves that can easily accommodate it. Voila! No distortion at the climax - and no need to compress the over-all dynamic level of the whole piece, so the soft opening music is also presented with more clarity and less surface noise. That, added to Tacet's Neumann mikes and all-tube allanalog recording, results in a voluptuous, stunningly dynamic LP that now joins the ranks of the best-sounding ever made.
