Description
Jethro Burns is a funny man and a hell of a mandolin player. In the 50's and 60's, he and his musical partner Homer Haynes were a popular musical comedy act. They often parodied old folk songs and had quite a following as evidenced by concert attendance and record sales. After Homer passed away, another musician took his place but their popularity never recovered. Both Haynes and Burns were very talented musicians on guitar and mandolin and earned the respect of many Nashville pickers and players. They made one album called "Playing it Straight" in which they shed their comic personnas and just played instrumental solos. It was fabulous as they showcased western swing and jazz arrangements of many pop standards. In the 1970's, Jethro became the accompanist for legendary folk song writer and performer Steve Goodman. When I saw and heard Jethro Burns play his mandolin at a celebration of Steve Goodman's music after he died, I realized that there weren't too many mandolin players around that could touch his virtuosity. This record album, TEA FOR ONE, is a testament to what a fabulous player he was. The songs are all arranged and played solo by him on his mandolin. Reportedly, fellow legendary mandolinist David Grisman produced the album and may even have played a lick or two on it.
For sale is this hard to find album featuring the mandolin virtuoso Jethro Burns on many jazz and swing compositions. This is a 12" LP that was record # KaleidescopeF-14. It appears to be in excellent condition. It has been autographed in blue ink on the back. The inscription reads: "To Howard, Hope you enjoy this, it demonstrates what can be done with unskilled labor! Best Wishes, Jethro Burns"(photo 2). Song titles can be found in photos 4 & 5. The album was recorded on July 24th, 1980 but was not released until 1982. Signature and inscription are very legible, vinyl appears to be new and cover is in excellent shape with no wear, dirt, seam breaks, etc. On the back there is a picture of Jethro bashing Grisman with his mandolin (photo 3). A rare, wonderful album by an extremely talented, humorous and kind man. Sidebar: As a kid, I helped deliver Fuller Brush products to Jethro's home in Evanston, IL.
