Description

Highly-desirable 2lp gatefold set of Michel Kiener performing Bach's Goldberg Variations.  Recorded on analog tape in 1988 with extremely minimalist techniques.  Notes include:
"This recording has been deliberately made using analog technology with two microphones and with YBA equipment (cables and controls).  The master tape was not processed in any way (e.g. Dolby compression) after the recording. The above precautions produce a transparent, natural sound as is needed to fully appreciate the exceptional interpretation of Michel Kiener.
Home Theater Review writes:
"...beginning with a frighteningly lifelike recording of the harpsichord (yes, sceptics, I have heard one up close), Michel Keiner's performance of Bach's Goldberg Variations on Associations Cercle Kallistos CK 1004. (This is a limited edition LP recorded with purist techniques, in collaboration with YBA of France.) Along with one or two Sheffield Lab releases, it's one of the best 'lone instrument' recordings I've ever heard...."
Arthur Salvatore of High End Audio writes:

"The sonics are like a top notch direct-to-disc, being super clean, very immediate and dynamic. The sound is focused and it doesn't change at different volumes or when the music becomes complex. The sound-floor is extremely low. This LP is the closest that I've heard to a real harpsichord in your own listening room. It might even be better than the two incredible Japanese RCA direct-to-disc piano records."

"I realize this is a very rare album, but I have no choice, this set must be recognized for what it is, and it is definitely worth the effort and expense to find a copy, especially if the music is appealing. I've never seen one listed used."

Records cleaned on VPI cleaner with Record Research fluids. Marks--if any--are play-tested for audibility. Complex/taxing passages tested for lack of inner-groove distortion. ALL GRADING OBJECTIVELY-BASED IRREGARDLESS OF AGE OR VALUE OF RECORD. I use the Goldmine grading standard. Bid with confidence. Records shipped in dedicated Lp mailer with protective inserts

Vinyl: Side one has a tiny mark that causes 12 very light tics in the middle of the opening "Aria." Other than that the vinyl is NM+ (No scratches, no hairlines, no scuffs, high gloss, ultra-quiet surfaces.  No spindle marks on center labels.)

Cover:  NM- (just a touch of shelf-wear on bottom)
