The greatest Dutch conductor of the first half of the twentieth century, Willem Mengelberg dominated the musical scene of his time with his highly individual approach of Bach and Mahler. His adagium that there is no such thing as an authentic approach, but that the conductor must help the creator by his own interpretation, led to this wonderful Mengelberg recording.
