Bad Company
'S/T'
Island, UK, 1974
ILPS 9279
THE BAND'S first album has always been regraded as one of the best debut records of all time. So good in fact that its debateable whether the band ever bettered this release.
Every song here is a major achievemnt - there's not one track that you could identify as a filler - and the arrangements are so dynamic and thoughtful. The self titled lead track, which actually opens side two, sets the scene with its brooding and ominous riff; a masterpiece and a Bad Co. classic from top to toe. 'Can't Get Enough' moves the template one stage further, giving them the radio staple that they needed and a track that in retrospect would be identified as possibly their most accomplished work. 'Rock Steady', 'Ready For Love' and 'Movin On' are clearly inspired and derived from the same style as Free which is hardly surprising as both Paul Rodgers and Simon Kirke had vowed to carry on the work of that great act.
Rodgers excells on all levels utilizing his signature blues holler to maximum effect and crafting some of the greatest vocals of all time. His rapore with guitarist Mick Ralphs is uncanny, the two locking into a lean and mean fighting machine rivalling Page and Plant.
Produced by Ron Nevison the recording exhudes class and sophistication but doesn't hold back on the raw blues influences. Rough and raw but with an exqusite sheen, the vibe is one of sophisticated thuggery but never overstating the point.
One of the greatest albums released during the seventies.
This auction is part of a fantastic collection of seventies rock which I was lucky enough to acquire. Most of these records were stored with the utmost care and sparsely played. Some were possibly never played or may have been for just a handful of times.
