One of the very rarest psych/blues/prog albums from the UK, on par as far as quality and rarity is concerned with Spirogyra's "Boots, bells, ..."and also Comus's "First utterance" , although the style, of course, is very different, any time this album comes up for sale there is a sense of excitement. This one is nice, very nice, an archive copy to treasure, please read on .
Very Rare and this classic early Harvest album will rarely be seen or offered in such amazing condition again. The cover goes beyond beautiful, just look at the artwork and the stunning condition, it will prove near impossible to find better these days. The record, apart from a couple of odd paper scuffs (as light as they ever get) and storage traces (yes this is rather old, but totally defies it), is wonderful and plays the same. I doubt if this has seen daylight for many years, it looks like it was stored under perfect conditions. Truly a remarkable copy and just one of several from this amazing collection. This collection has always been stored in a proper archive cabinet and inside a protective sleeve. These progressive gems and classics are to be treasured, they rarely ever show up these days or made available for sale especially like this.
Earliest psych/prog/folk gem and one of the most prized and wonderful albums from the vintage Harvest catalogue, a label noted for its progressive music and one of the most difficult to find. This is from the same collection as the Forest albums I auctioned a few weeks ago. This indeed has the earliest matrices. From 1967 the psych wave was drifting into all forms of music from pop to folk and was no exception. Groups like the Incredible String Band (ISB) started the revolution and others like Dr Strangely Strange, Spirogyra. Forest and Bakerloo followed their lead. Their career was pushed forward by John Peel and eventually they got their chance with the progressive Harvest label, this debut was recorded at the Abbey Road studio, all the songs were original and brilliantly captivating.
The line-up then was Dave 'Clem' Clempson on guitar and vocals, Terry Poole on bass and John Hinch on drums. Initially they stuck to a largely blues based set, yet like so many of the innovative acts of the era grew tired of the formula and began to experiment. They attracted Black Sabbath's future manager Jim Simpson, and attracted a considerable following- enough to win them a slot on John Peel's BBC Radio 1 show 'Top Gear'. However, there was a touch of Spinal Tap syndrome with drummers as Hinch was replaced with a multitude of players until they finally settled on Keith Baker. They also decided to drop the 'Blues Line' and became the shortened Bakerloo, and were put on a package tour called 'Big Bear Ffolly' (which inspired Bakerloo's song of the same name) with other local bands Tea and Symphony, Locomotive (another highly innovative proto prog combo) and Earth, who would of course later evolve into the massively successful Black Sabbath.
They recorded their album prior to getting a record deal under the aegis of legendary, recently deceased producer Gus Dudgeon yet eventually, Simpson secured a deal with the new 'progressive/underground' imprint Harvest Records, which housed the likes of Pink Floyd, Edgar Broughton Band and aforementioned fellow Brummies, Tea and Symphony. Though the album received very enthusiastic reviews and the band had a sizeable cult following, it sold little. This was a shame, because it remains a genuinely 'progressive' album with blues, jazz, classical and heavy rock meeting head-on, yet seamlessly. However, internal ructions ripped the band apart anyway and despite some line-up reshuffles, with noted rock drummer Cozy Powell joining the band. That line-up lasted a small amount of time before Jon Hiseman, who had been impressed with Clempson's guitar prowess, invited him to join the legendary jazz rock combo Colosseum. Keith Baker joined Uriah Heep for their classic 'Salisbury' album and Terry Poole turned up on blues/jazz rock innovator Graham Bond's albums of the era. Clempson, after Colosseum split, went on to work with heavy rockers Humble Pie who were a massive success, and Rough Diamond with ex-Uriah Heep singer David Byron, who were not. Clempson continued to work with a variety of artists. However, the other members seemingly fell off the radar after the 1970s. Still, Bakerloo's one and only album (a real collector's item in original vinyl format) is a definite underrated classic and has a lot to offer fans of the genre.
Why this artist must be listed in www.progarchives.com : Bakerloo were a genuinely progressive act- they took the experiments of bands like Cream and Ten Years After one step further by adding stronger elements of jazz and classical into their blues rock based music. Gatefold Sleeve: NM. Fantastic looked after outside laminated E.J. Day sleeve without any issues. Beautiful deep unfaded colours. A superb iconic gatefold sleeve with the fantastic artwork. NO creases at all, just over the counter condition!! A superb thick spine without any wear. The opening is super crisp. NO tears and NO splits The album has been kept in a protective sleeve!! No writing no marks no stains etc!! The opening is still crisp and the top and bottom edges are totallyunworn. This is an upgrade copy. Probably the best you will ever find for this insanely rare album. A phenomenally scarce album and rumoured to only have been pressed in a quantity of 400 to 500. How many would have survived over the last 52 years??
Vinyl: EX+. This seems only very lightly played. There are no marks and I could only find one wispy totally inaudible hairline on side 1. On replay, on my Linn Sondek/Rotel/B&W setup, the album sounded out of this world. NO background noise and NO jumps or sticks etc. The stereo sound is incredible and a testament to the quality of the very heavy pre-oil crisis vinyl of 1969.
