Devendra Banhart was in his early 20s when he released this fourth studio album of his back in 2005. It was the American-Venezuelan frontman's first for XL Recordings and he found himself making anti-folk that was labelled "freak-folk". It's a sign of those times and fashion back then that anything nearly resembling folk made it onto XL. The direction he found himself taking was influenced by a stellar cast of producer-musicians: Andy Cabic from Vetiver, Noah Georgeson (Little Joy, Bert Jansch) and Thom Monahan (Wild Nothing, Vetiver). Along with the likes of Joanna Newsom and Adam Green from Moldy Peaches. In retrospect it reads like the creme de la creme of that soon-to-be-hip-again era and the songs are timeless. 'Long Haired Child', 'I Feel Just Like A Child' and 'Santa Maria De Feira' are especially enthralling and a reminder from a time in Banhart's life when songs were just pouring out of him.
