Baraka, Love is as Open as Your Heart
(U.S.A. Baraka Records BK1-0001) 1976
Sleeve: EX The white, blue ink-printed sleeve has very minor age discoloration and no real creases or wrinkles. The top corner is dented about 1/2" and the bottom seam is
"tightly" split about 1 1/4" in from the opening. Apart from those issues the spine and seams are sharp. See pics.
Disc: VG+ There are a few marks on an otherwise glossy, clean surface. They cause the occasional "tic." There is one more serious mark, about :60 into "Deja Vu" (last song on side one) that causes 6-10 tics and is included, unaltered, in the sound file below. The label shows some light spindle marks and the B-side label was not clearly printed.
Baraka was a band with a mission: to share with the world their Divine Cosmic Love Energy and spread the Universal Essence of Love...with the goal to "unlock and fling open the doors to the NEW AGE."
Although I can't admit to knowing any more about Baraka than you do, it certainly seems like a group that could only possibly have lived and thrived in the Southern California of the mid-70's--after hippies, the birth-control pill, psychedelics and women's lib; after Vietnam & Watergate, and pre-Saturday Night Fever, cocaine, AIDS and Ronald Reagan--probably a very strange time, and I bet the quaaludes didn't help (or did they? I wouldn't know...)
Baraka may be a product of the Seventies, but their sound is a bit harder to pin down. There's an otherworldly, faraway vibe to this record, and they're pretty successful at creating a dreamy, slightly dazed atmosphere. This is partly a result of the distinctly lo-fi recording quality here, which I'd consider an asset. It works particularly well on drums and overdriven, fuzztone guitars (plentiful here).
You get (mainly) female lead vocals (from Su-Zan, who was also responsible for the amazing front cover art), some nice, fuzzy wah-wah guitar, great bass playing, and octophone by Doc.
