Brief Info: A difficult album to pigeon-hole – a 1960s psychedelic sci-fi film soundtrack, the movie starring Jane Fonda in the title role of the glamour space cadet along with David Hemmings as Dildano, leader of the resistance. Milo O’Shea plays the evil Durand Durand, from where the 1970s new romantic band got their name. The film proved popular in the UK – Fonda clearly a factor – but far less so in the US, over time, this has become something of a cult ‘classic’. The music from the film also has a cult following, but only purchased by a few when first issued – this is quite a rare album from 1968 and seldom seen. Bob Crewe and Charles Fox were allowed to view the finished film that had no soundtrack, they made the surreal space-trip complete by adding this music which works perfectly. Orchestration with some superb acid-psych guitar and effects – forget the ‘soundtrack’ tag – this is a superb work that would stand alone regardless. Prog and rock fans will enjoy elements of this as well, it has an almost indescribable charm and charisma and is still great fun to listen-to (as is the film to watch). A follow-up was planned, but never happened. Even today, this film is Fond(a)ly remembered and talks of a remake are rumoured. This is an excellent 1968 original soundtrack, the first I have seen or had for some considerable time.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: but looking better in real terms, a mild movement press mark on the top edge being the only small blemish stopping a higher grade. A single format with front laminate, this covers all the folds and ends on the back on three external flipbacks. The main back panel is matt and smooth. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse with ‘Patents Pending’ text, includes the plain white inner sleeve.

Lamination & Front: One of the 1960s classic soundtrack front covers that few of a certain age will not recognise. Here seen in impressive condition: the laminate retains excellent shine, freshness and clarity with hardly any creasing, no major lifting and minimal traces of dulling, even under light. A fine gentle abrasion seen near the top centre and a hint of a sticker removal near the top right, but little else. The famous deeply coloured graphic of Fonda as Barbarella looking magnificent and clean.

Cover Back: The back is simply fantastic, I would easily grade this Mint(–) on its own, it has little to fault at all and remains unusually clean and unaged. Any discolouration minuscule, hardly any creasing – three or four on the laminate on the flipbacks only – and no rubbing, marks or writing. The three flipbacks are almost a fine and clean as they get. All solid, unlifted or damaged with clean ends with no burring. A lovely back with all the details of the music for each track and film segment.

Top Edge: Thin, but straight. The centre has a mild scuff and movement pressure mark, the laminate feels smooth and intact, a possible very fine split or near one on the front fold, so in terms of this common issue, this has fairly close to getting away with it, but is a blemish nonetheless. Given the age and rarity of this cover, few will better it anyway.

Bottom Edge: The bottom edge is again very thin but little short of perfect as made.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly very sharp with minimal hint of wear. Any thickening or burring minimal even as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced, the front laminate end exposed strip still very much present and barely worn at all.

Spine and Text: A near perfect spine: solid, straight with barely any compression, the ends gently tapered in manufacture. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate, this being perfectly centred as well for maximum neatness.

Corners: A small rub on the top right front, little else. Excellent or better shape retained with no knocks or dinks.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this elusive 1960’s cult soundtrack cover, one that could prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): in terms of lack of wear, but the owner wrote bass and treble settings on one side – that often a sign of a caring, more discerning sound person. A plain white unlined inner with the ‘PATENT APPLIED FOR’ text. Hardly creased and clean, one very small edge split I neatly repaired to stop it potentially widening in future, it hardly registers.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: side one even better. There is a small mark on side two, possibly in the pressing itself on the first song, most of any gentle, very brief clicks are largely, if not practically all lost in the quite loud sound on this small area – so registering very little at all. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and very solidly pressed. A copy possibly played a few times, but it appears mostly with due care on a qualithy record player, any other marks few, very light and faint as seen critically under bright angled light, these being surface or fine hairlines and superficial. Slight patchy dulling under light on side two, likely in manufacture again with no audio significance whatsoever. Visually a super vintage record that should please many collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This superb soundtrack album plays even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed, barely anything and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*, finding a clean sounding copy will prove massively difficult. Such recordings are never easy, but this more than rises to the challenge and was a delight to play-grade. The small visual mark is explained above and hardly even registers, the odd sporadic click on such a record near impossible to avoid, but this is very impressive indeed with hardly anything. Most-all of the few originals that surface are invariably wrecked and I will never offer such records. Those who did shell-out on a copy of this often played it heavily on the most basic of record players, this one has received no harsh treatment like that with focused, clear and impressive sound assured. A complex and intense recording, this record does it nigh-on maximum justice. Few copies will outperform this ultra early pressing significantly I feel sure. I doubt if this would have been available too long and note the earliest stamper codes listed further up – ‘G’ and ‘R’ being the first and second in the pressing sequence. Both channels are clean and sharp and the stereo imagery is fantastic. I am certain this record has been played quite modestly and largely with due care. Nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record, only my second copy to offer ever. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended unless absolute perfection is mandatory – “Barbarella Psychedella” – the best alternative soundtrack of the 1960s.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
