Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only a tiny few light, fine and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area.

Warps: Few vintage records are ever perfectly ‘flat’, so some slight or very gentle arm movement is normal. If any record I offer has more than that, I will mention it, and it can be assumed all I offer should track without issues, even on budget turntables.

Brief Info: The second BJH album and for many, it’s considered their best. A brilliant progressive rock album that includes the sublime ‘Mockingbird’. Again, this set was recorded with an orchestra that gives extra warmth and depth to the songs. Not a major selling initially, thus first pressings without the EMI box logo on the labels are rare and few would have even been manufactured. This a lovely copy appearing little played and plays very well indeed with little unwanted. That is always difficult as this does have some very quiet passages – the odd gentle tick or two near impossible to avoid, especially at a time when pressing quality was variable due to the oil shortage of the time. Also beautifully produced by Norman Smith with engineering by Pete Brown. This first pressing the best I have heard in some time.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: a gatefold format with the front and back laminated. The inside is matt and smooth. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd, includes the Harvest promotional inner sleeve.

Lamination – Front & Back: Both sides retain excellent shine, fine freshness and clarity with any dulling gentle and light seen under light on the back where the record rests inside. A small thumb crease on the bottom front right corner end the main (but small) blemish. Any creasing little and light. The splendid butterfly trademark of the band logo looks superb when fully opened (as seen) with deep vibrant colour. Any real wear to these outer faces minimal and light and looking impressive.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Very impressive with little to fault at all, any traces of discolouration to the predominately white surface gentle and faint near the very top edges (look very hard).

Top Edges: Both folds straight with full laminate and hardly worn. Very gentle thickening of the card end panels only, and that seldom avoided.

Bottom Edges: Largely as above with just thickening to the back at the right end.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with any thickening patchy, very little and light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on the baack edge, all are guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with any compression light. This another spine that will always form a central crease due to the inner hinge being quite raised. Here only very light with no sinkage of the text which remains fully intact under the solid, clear laminate. Folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. There is gentle tilt to right, but no crushing as such.

Corners: Any tip rubs mostly very small and light, very fine to excellent shape retained with no knocks.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this beautiful early Harvest cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better, especially with a first pressed record inside that were invariably thicker and heavier than repressings. This attractive item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): the polylined Harvest promotional inner is very impressive indeed and hardly aged compared to most seen now. The paper still fresh and clean and hardly creased, all edges unsplit with no repairs, just the odd tiny nick on the top opening.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): a very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and very solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface marks few, mostly very light (one thicker hairline apart (with no sound)) and faint as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, little even registers. A few small dull spot traces on the first song within the pressing, that hardly unusual, again there is no affect on sound which is impressive throughout. Visually a very fine looking record, appearing little used that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This magnificent prog-rock album plays even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed – three mild clicks on the first track which has a very quiet passage apart – few will better this overall. A clean pressing with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing rasps or distortions – a trait I have heard on this album, mostly on second or later pressings several times, so that more good news. Few available copies will outperform this early genuine first pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Little of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful album, by first first pressing of this for years. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
