Barney Kessel really was on really "on fire" and on the top of his game in the mid-1960s. This is a trio live recording, Barney with Frankie Capp and Jerry Scheff (drums and double bass respectively) so you'll find Barney with a lot of space to play and to express his musical ideas. The sound is phenomenal so don't be worried about the fidelity of the recording, you'll enjoy it very much. The nice fact is that this is the first time Barney has been recorded "live" in concert and not in the studio, so without the common restrictions due to the studio limits. What you can hear is a wonderful musician really stretching out and letting his chops come out freely on some standards chord progressions. The first tune is a blues a typical Barney blues, and if you know the man's style you know what I mean, that sort of lines interspaced with block chords and stuff. Fantastic, pure vintage Barney! The second tune is Just in time, a standard of the era here taken up up tempo! The third tune is the lovely "Shadow of your smile" from Johnny Mandel's pen. Barney more or less played only the theme at very slow tempo and with great lyricism. Hey, I know you know it, but we're talking about Barney Kessel, one of the greatest that ever picked up the instrument, so excellence is obvious! The fourth tune is a bossa nova, "Recado Bossa Nova" a nice twist over the swing feel that is throughout the album. At this point in my first listening session I'm judging this as one of the best Barney's album for sure because you can hear him "naked", captured live without the net. Moreover he is in top form and as the only soloist here, something that was not so common in his albums. After these 5 bossa nova minutes we have "Sweet baby" which is an original by Barney himself, a sort of mid tempo ballad where he played the tender theme alternating block chords (a lot of them) with single line phrases. A very nice tune I didn't know, prior to this recording. "Who can I turn to" is a pure ballad, a standard song played here very quietly, with brushes. I am a Jazz guitar player myself and I can say that playing a nice slow melody in such silence in front of a public in a small club, is not easy but extremely rewarding. Barney of course is a master. Only two minute, but what an atmosphere. And in the end another blues of course, just to close the set with the fireworks leaving the people something they can easily relate to e remember quite clearly. Well in the end, what can I say? It's a great album, it costs some money but it is great stuff. It's an extraordinary album that I recommend  to every Kessel's lover and to every cat in love with this our instrument, the Jazz guitar.

·                               CONDITION:

·                               RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VG++. A few light abrasions  ARE VISIBLE, but they appear fairly  insignificant relative to the overall condition of the vinyl, and are only moderately visually distracting. For most part, the vinyl looks impeccable, without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)             Stereo  pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more preferable to its mono  counterpart. The mix is more graphic, the sound resolution more precise, and the channel separation (which does not exist on mono version) adds a whole new dimension to the music. Also, the stereo mixes are (by definition) somewhat different than on the mono version. We estimate that mono copies of this album outnumber stereo copies  by a ratio of at least 5:1.

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has a partially split top seam (less than 1 inch / 2.5 centimeters)

-        Cover has a partially split bottom seam (less than 1 inch / 2.5 centimeters)

-         Cover has some visible fraying/tattering on the top and bottom seams

-         Cover has all four corners slightly worn / dinged / bent.

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 4

-         Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging  (nothing significant).

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine

-         Minor shelf wear noted on the spine (nothing significant)

-         Back cover has some light yellowish stains, probably from exposure to humidity  (nothing significant) (less than 1/2 square inch in size)

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents
