Oliver Nelson, alto and tenor saxophone, composer and arranger, seems to be one of those jazz musicians that slipped through my net. Up to now. Last night I played myself the New Jazz recording Screamin' The Blues as played by the Oliver Nelson Sextet. This album was recorded by Rudy Van Gelder May 1960.
Born in St. Louis ( June 1932) Oliver Nelson started his career in the Jeter-Pillars Orchestra and George Hudson Big Band, two St. Louis based orchestras. He toured around with Louis Jordan's band too and after he finished his military services at the navy he started a career in music in New York. This record was made during that period. It was one of the six albums he recorded - three of it with Eric Dolphy also present on Screamin' The Blues. When you listen to the first track of Screaming The Blues, with the same title as the album, you might think that Oliver Nelson might be a player that lays on the floor with his tenor aimed high, honking and screaming as loud as he could.
