Brief Info: The song this gifted singer will always be associated with. I can hardly believe this is 50-years-old. With its apocolytic lyrics, it is quite surprising how well this 45 sold, it has to be one of bleakest hit singles ever made. Powerful and biting lyrics and quite unforgettable. But this is far from the only song on this impressive early album that also proved successful. A highly regarded folk singer, even Frank Zappa credits him in his list of influences on the classic Mothers of Invention album cover ‘Freak Out!’ This very first UK-pressed album looks very lightly played and plays beautifully. That powerful voice fully focused and intact on unworn grooves. One of the 1960s classic of its type and strongly recommended.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: a single format with front Clarifoil laminate. The covers the closed folds and ends on the back on the spine edge. The back itself is matt and smooth. Printed and made in England by Robert Stace. Includes the vintage Decca-style 19655 date-coded inner sleeve.

Lamination & Front: For quite a flimsy 50-year-old cover, this has aged quite well. The laminate retains very fine shine, freshness and clarity with no lifting and minimal dulling. Some fine and light laminate creases mainly on the edges with any marks few and fine. A Clarifoil laminate front largely without the usual issues these normally acquire over time.

Cover Back: The back has aged a little more with a little patchy grubbiness and toning. Hardly any rubbing or creasing and all very respectable. Seen on the bottom right corner, is the original asking price of 32/2 gently seen in faded pencil. That equates to £1.61 in current money.

Top Edge: Thin with full laminate which is smooth and unworn, a little bowing which is almost the norm on these types.

Bottom Edge: A little gentle rubbing here and there and showing little, otherwise as per above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with very little wear. Any thickening or burring minimal and light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid, but thin, reasonably straight with minimal compression. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate. Also quite well centred on a very narrow depth.

Corners: Very fine to excellent shape with little wear and no dinks.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this quite fragile mid-1960’s cover, one that could prove difficult to find much better. A little aged on the back, but not a great else to fault, this early item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: a heavy duty vintage Decca-style polylined inner. This one being date-coded 055 (May 1965), British patented and with ‘Foreign patents pending’ text. A little aged again with the usual darkening of the seam adhesive and lesser to the paper. Two immaculate window circles and the lining very clear and fresh. Minimal creasing and no edges splits or repairs, a smallish pen mark on the back.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: or very close to, side one even better. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and heavily pressed on top-quality Decca vinyl as utilised by RCA at this time. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface marks few, very light and mainly quite faint mostly as seen critically under bright angled light. No penetrating stylus scratches and visually a super record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality album plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few copies will outperform this very early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Any mono record this great age in such condition are never easy to find and this is impressive. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
