BASIL KIRCHIN – WORLDS WITHIN WORLDS, PARTS 3 & 4 – ISLAND, HELP 18
Basil Kirchin (1927-2005), former jazz drummer and big band leader, later composer of unique acclaimed film soundtracks. His more experimental pioneering work resulted in two LPs containing "soundtracks for unmade films". Issued 2-years apart, neither sold more than a handful of copies; both were entitled ‘Worlds Within Worlds’. This is the rare second one, parts 3 & 4, issued 1974 on Island label, catalogue number HELP 18. It’s scored for flugelhorn, Alpine horn, 2 woodwinds, cello, organ, plus numerous animals, insects, birds, jets and other engine noises, and autistic children! Since Kirchin’s death, these 2 albums have begun to enjoy an influential almost mythical status.
The disc is clean and shiny but has several light scratches (nothing horrendous): side 1 – about 30 light ticks; side 2 – about 40 light ticks. Some of the ticks could be part of the recording – difficult to tell at times! The matt sleeve has a 3cm split at top and is rather badly scuffed in places.
