Bathory were a highly influential Swedish heavy metal band, regarded as one of the forefathers of black metal, founder of viking metal, and one of the most influential groups in the development of folk metal. The band's name is taken from the infamous Hungarian "blood countess," Elizabeth Báthory.

Bathory was formed in Stockholm in 1983, for fun, by the then 17-year-old Quorthon. After various names and numerous line-up changes, the group finally settled on Bathory. Their first recording deal came that same year, when Quorthon managed to secure the consent of Tyfon Grammofon's boss, who was the main man's father, to record two tracks for the compilation Scandinavian Metal Attack. The tracks which he recorded gained unexpected attention by fans. Soon afterward, Tyfon Grammofon contacted Quorthon and asked him to record a full-length album.

Although Venom's Black Metal (1982) was the first record to coin the term, it was Bathory's early albums, featuring Satanic lyrics, low-fi production and an inhuman vocal style, that defined the genre. On a further note, many fans had speculated that Venom was an influence on Bathory, however Quorthon has said in an 1985 interview with Kick Ass Magazine that he only heard Venom after the first Bathory album was released. He also expressed his dislike of bands such as 'Iron Maiden and Judas Priest. He has also stated that the band's early work was influenced primarily by Black Sabbath, Motorhead and Oi! punk.

Bathory's subsequent releases, the self-titled debut, The Return and Under the Sign of the Black Mark are now regarded as major influences on the Norwegian bands which extended Black Metal's musical progression and popularity in the beginning of the 1990s.

The first signs of what was to follow appeared on what some fans consider to be Bathory's best album: Blood Fire Death, where on some of the tracks the pace had slowed down to allow for a more epic songwriting approach. It was also here that the Viking theme was introduced. Most of the musical elements of Black Metal were still present.

This was a monumental album at the time of its release and today, while the production is obviously not up to the standards of much of today's extreme metal, it stands up as a classic landmark. Quorthon was never more in tune with what worked than he was at this point...

The proper opening track (Fine Day to Die) is powerful and epic more than ever before for Bathory, but you are kept on your toes: Golden Walls that follows is one of the most effective speed metal tracks ever put on to plastic with relentless power and incredibly accute time changes accompanied by great lyrics. Holocaust contains one evil sounding riff with sledgehammer aggression throughout and the album concludes with something close to the direction he would take with Hammerheart, the epic and mid-paced title track utilising properly for the first time what would become a Bathory staple, the majestic choral background.

With a Viking atmosphere (although not strictly a Viking album in the lyrical sense), plenty of variety in the well-written song structures and a beautiful album cover Blood Fire Death is an essential album to own for anyone with a taste for extreme/black/viking/thrash metal.

I am 32 old years now, and I remember hearing this album for the first time when I was in high school... I can tell you I have not stopped listening 'til now. This is the best Black Metal Album so far. The atmosphere is unbelievable from the first intro and the classic anthem A FINE DAY TO DIE, then the records takes you to a journey of speed, really fantastic, a lesson on how to play fast and heavy but with endless variants, special mention to GOLDEN WALLS OF HEAVEN amd PACE TILL DEATH that will make you sweat just by listening... and the journey ends with another masterpiece of melancholic roughness with BLOOD FIRE DEATH that ends as the record begins, so by the time it ends, you start feeling addicted to speed and will push play again and again and again. The album is consistent and intense, hard to pick just one song, definitely you have to listen to the journey from the beginning to the end every time you play it.
