Bat Label/Format: Stateside – Ultimate first UK examples with embossed ‘K T’ tax codes on side two. Both letters unworn as can be seen on my scan.

Label Conditions: Both quite clean with only slight Bat-ageing or Bat-handling. Spindle marks are light to less than moderate. A little ‘spread’ but reasonably fine with no ink removal or scuffing, showing more under light but little with normal visibility.

Bat-Mode: HOLY ONE-CHANNEL!!, IT’S A MONO RECORD BATMAN!! – FEAR NOT ROBIN!, this WILL play on all stereo equipment, things have moved on since 1966.

Speed: 33.3 Bat-Revs.

Bat-Warps?: FEAR NOT ROBIN!!, the only warping here are the minds of those devious villains – SOCK, POW, THUD, BIFF!!!!!!

Weight of this Bat-Record: 158 grams. A BATASTIC weight for any record, this is real heavy.

Country of Manufacture: England [nowhere near Gotham City!!]

Bat-Rarity: POW, BIFF, CRUNCH!!! – this is a rare one, seldom seen or offered and this is a time-piece gem for fans of a certain age. I don’t think I ever missed an episode back in the 60s. A curious piece really: at what market would this have been aimed at? Clearly likely, the early age group, which means this record, especially in mono could and would have been subjected to all matter of punishment. Younger listeners, even quite young children left alone with a long-playing record would mean almost certain Bat-Disaster. Few would have survived without scratches and all other peril even the Dynamic Duo could have failed to prevent. To find one of these in mono that appears modestly played and with few marks and still offering super-clean sound quality is a riddle even the green-clad arch-villian could not answer. KAPOWWWWW!!!!!!!!!

Brief Bat-Info: TO THE BATPOLES!! … This is the original TV Batman with Adam West and Burt Ward as the Dynamic Duo. Very tongue-in-cheek and often hilarious and a vital link to the popularity of the ‘Super-Hero’ on TV and the larger screen. This rare 1966 early pressed Stateside record features one of the most famous television theme tunes ever written and with more action music and dialogue from the super-heroes and arch villians, this makes for great vintage entertainment that will bring the memories flooding back to those of a similar age to myself. KAPOWWW!!!, just look at that fantastic cover artwork, the caped crusaders in the famous original Batmobile, this is the comic-book version of Gotham City’s saviours. Memories of collecting those bubblegum trading cards when at school and tuning in to the television two-part episodes in anticipation of which villain would be featured this time – The Joker?, Egghead?, The Riddler, Catwoman? or The Penguin? Bruce Wayne and Dick Grayson sliding down the Batpoles – then seen again as Batman and Robin – the roaring of the Batmobile out of the Batcave – this was as good as 60s Comic Book heroes got in the 1960s. SOCK, POW, BIFF!!!! this is a very nice mono copy, my first one ever, my only other one of these from a couple of years ago, was stereo. The cover has aged a little but the record less so and plays superbly. For fans of the original TV batman, this is a priceless piece and they do not show up often. As stated above, to what market was this one intended?

Bat-Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(-): A real archive cover from the vaults of the Batcave. A single format with front laminate, this wraps around the closed edges and on to three external rear flipbacks. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse and has the ‘Patents pending’ text.

Lamination & Front: HOLY GOOD LOOKING FRONT BATMAN!!! Correct again boy-wonder! – A little light toning and rubbing on the edges and some fine edge creases. A couple of moderate ones near the bottom left corner area and one near the top edge, but with fairly modest visibility. The main graphic looks superb with rich, bright and vivid colour that retains genuine freshness. The laminate retains an impressive shine and clarity and is fully adhered with no lifts or blisters. A little very mild cracking on the spine. Even under light, any friction rubs or dulling are light and seen little. Given the high likelihood this was purchased for a younger person’s pleasure, this cover has survived in fine all-round condition.

Cover Back: A LITTLE MORE WEAR HERE BATMAN!! – Of course old chum, it is 45-years-old and has NO BAT-PROTECTION!! The Caped Crusader is correct of course, but in real terms, this back has only quite modest wear and ageing. Some light discolouration, mainly near the left edge with a little mild toning. Just one light crease near the top right corner that shows little and barely any rubbing and no ringwear on the main back panel. The only real wear as such is on the bottom flipback. There are a few scuffs to the edges and some mild discolour the exposed strips where the laminate ends, but not a great deal. All three are solid and the ends to the spine and top ones are very neat indeed. Given all the facts, this back has remained in a solid very good condition.

Top Edge: Minimal traces of any wear and still with full laminate protection with no scuffs.

Bottom Edge: Faint tone spots but little wear again.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, fairly sharp with a little wear and a couple of mild scuffs on the front but no feathering and guaranteed untrimmed. A more rustic trim in manufacture just as per the last one I had. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Bat-Text: Solid, fairly straight with any compression mild. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and unpeeled laminate. A small few very fine surface hairline creases show little.

Corners: Some tip rubbing/light scuffs/creases, but all pretty light. Being white, these again have lesser visual impact – BIFF, CRUNCH!!!!!

Cover Bat-Summary: A very respectable and still attractive all-round example of this elusively scarce 60’s Batcover, one that could prove difficult to find significantly better. This classic time-piece bat-sleeve should please many collectors and childhood fans.

The Bat-Inner Sleeve: HOLY FRAGILE INNER BATMAN!!! This vintage album includes it’s original tracing paper style lined inner, similar to those used in Beatles albums of this period. As you would probably expect, this has moderately darkened with age but does remain solidly intact. Both window circles are immaculate and crisp with no damage at all. The same goes for the incredibly delicate tracing paper lining which only has the usual crinkle. Just one one corner crease and all edges intact but a little thinned by the very heavy, thick record.

Bat-Vinyl Condition/Visual Bat-Grading: TO THE BATMOBILE!!!!!!! EXCELLENT Robin: an impressive visual copy that is clean with a very respectable shine, intense black and heavily pressed on very thick vinyl. A copy played a few times and with light surface marks seen under light with just one or two a little more obvious. But this has NO penetrating scratches or arm drops or jolts that would have been disastrous and this record offers very impressive and clean sound. Visually a super record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: HOLY OBVIOUS BATMAN, YES!!!!!! [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Bat-Sound Quality and Bat-Audio Grading: MEANWHILE!!!!!!! This vintage nostalgic record plays even above its visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal and no significant pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few mono copies will match or outperform this very early 1R/1R pressing I feel sure. A record with quiet segments of dialogue as well as music, so the demands put on a record this great age is clearly immense. Both channels are clean and sharp with no single channel mono noises. You can imagine the potential damages and wear this could have been inflicted with, especially if a child was allowed to play it unaided or supervised – and I am sure it must have happened on some. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record, as a kid, I was a Batman fanatic and could hardly wait for the next episode – this bought those memories flooding back. Mono examples will always be the most difficult to find in playable conditions, especially if played on high quality stereo equipment for which they were not really designed. This copy will prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended – SOCK, POW, BIFF, AARRRRGGGGGG, THUD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A comic-book record will rarely sound better than this. LET’S GO HOME OLD CHUM!!!!!!!!!

You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
