Description

A four 10" disc recording of Ralph Vaughan Williams' 3rd opera "Sir John in Love" by BBC Transcription Service. This is the 1956 BBC Radio studio performance. These discs would be sent to other radio stations around the world for broadcast. 
BBC Transcription Service typically pressed only one hundred copies of each disc with instructions to the overseas networks to return or destroy the disc(s) at the end of the licence period. These have an expiry date of 11 February 1959.
Obviously, these discs are very rare indeed.
A version of this recording was released on the Lyrita label REAM2122 
The libretto, also by Vaughan Williams, is based on Shakespeare's The Merry Wives of Windsor. The music deploys English folk tunes, including Greensleeves. After 1958, the opera remained unstaged in the UK until 2006.
