Another forty-and-a-half minutes of the latest of the latest on the pop scene, presented by BRIAN MATTHEW from the BBC studio in London. This week Brian introduce:
American singer / song-writer TOM PAXTON – whose style and technique are highly individual. He writes about all aspects of life and human behavior and his songs are full of wit and satire. Tom started to play guitar and write songs while at the university, then while in the army he often went to watch performers like Peter, Paul and Mary, Bob Dylan and Judy Collins. He continued to write after he left the army when he went to live in New York’s Greenwich Village where he became ‘singer in residence’ at one of the clubs there. He was offered a recording contract and as well as recording his songs himself the began to appear on albums by many other artists. Now, at the age of 34 , Tom has written over 200 songs which have found their way into the repertoires of most of today’s contemporary folk’ artists. However, an entertainer above all things , Tom is still the best exponent of his own compositions and is constantly in demand for concerts throughout the world. In fact , he is one of the few solo artists to have sold-out London’s Royal Albert Hall – the audience of 7000 actually had to be turned out and sent home!
BADFINGER –who-unlike many groups who do their best to stay very much underground, releasing only albums and concentrating chiefly on concerts and clubs in the States – want to be commercial and heard and appreciated in as many places as possible. They feel that singles play a very important part in establishing a group on the scene and also in gaining even more interest in an outfit which is doing well on the strength of their alums. Although BAFINGER have not had a lot of chart success in Britain since their hits with ‘Come and Get it’ and ‘ No Matter What’ back last year, they have been building up quite a following in the States where they find that people are prepared to sit down and really listen to them. However, colleges in Britain have recently become very interested in the group since their work for George Garrison on hi ‘All Things Must Pass’ Album. Now BADFINGER DAY’ – and it could well be the one to bring them success.
MIDDLE OF THE ROAD –and, although they had played only in Italy before their first smash hit- ‘Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep’, there is now hardly a place in Europe they haven’t played. The success of ‘Chirpy’ was repeated almost immediately with the follow-up, ‘Tweedle Dee Tweedle Dum’. Now the’re back in the charts all over Europe and South America with the number from their latest single, ‘SOLEY SOLEY’. A little slower than their first two hits, it features once again the voice of lovely SALLY CARR.
VAL DOONICAN – once of Britain’s finest and most popular entertainers, but it took him fifteen years to be discovered ‘overnight’. His family possessed between them just about every type of string instrument except a guitar –so naturally Val wanted to play guitar! After singing with several small band in his homeland of Ireland he joined a vocal group, the Four Rambles, and shortly after this came to England for the first time. Later he made as a musician, song-writer and arranger. Since that first radio series Val had made many television as well as radio and live concert appearances and has several chart successes to his name. ‘MORNING’ is the number from Val’s latest hit which has gone straight into the Top Thirty in Britain.
PEACE – From time to time on ‘Top of the Pops’ we like to bring you new groups who we think are in with a good chance for the future, and this week we are featuring PEACE, an outfit who have only been together a few months. Led by ex-FREE guitarists PAUL RODGERS, the rest of the outfit is STUART McDonald (bass) and MICK UNDERWOOD (drums). They are becoming very popular on the club circuit in Britain and are currently recording an album for release early next year, and you can hear some of the numbers which may well be featured on it.
And, completing the bill –LABI SIFFRE- on a return visit to feature once again the number from his new single, ‘IT MUST BE LOVE’, which is currently storming up the charts here in Britain.
