Critics can be absolute pricks. Be-Bop Deluxe certainly deserved more thoughtful analysis than they were afforded in the mid-1970s, when lazy pens were pointing to similarities with David Bowie, sonically and aesthetically. An observation that eventually led to their disbanding as frontman and leader Bill Nelson looked to double down on their underlying eccentricity and make even more obscure music. First unveiled in 1974, Axe Victim was the outfit's debut studio album and by all accounts is a great bit of tackle. Yes, it's clearly born of glam rock, which was in its height at the time. And there are obvious progressive elements here, too. Another era-defining sub-genre. But what's more important is the quality at play here, too - from stunning instrumentation to rousing songwriting and theatrical arrangements.
