Label/Format: Capitol – original Capitol ‘Rainbow rim’ format with flat matt finish. With close examination, these look very slightly textured. Side two has the embossed ‘K T’ tax codes, both of which are pristine as made.

Label Conditions: Both look fantastic: very clean, super fresh and highly attractive with any spindle traces tiny, few and faint. The minimal traces of fingermarks to the matt and highly revealing surfaces is unusual to say the least. Once handling marks are applied to such surfaces, they are near impossible to remove. It will be immediately apparent to any winning bidder these labels have rarely been touched and I am certain this record has not seen light of day for decades. Please remember the great age of this evergreen classic and popular title, finding such clean and lightly played copies is immensely difficult.

Rarity: Original stereo copies are much rarer than the mono versions that was still the mode of choice back in 1966 with fewer people owning stereo equipment at this time. The earliest examples that still play with practically flawless sound are at a premium and this copy plays beautifully.

Brief Info: Issued in 1966, this masterpiece of popular music peaked at No 2 in the UK album charts and No 10 in the US. Rated by many critics and the record buying public as the greatest album ever issued, certainly within the ‘pop music’ genre, this album must rank as Brian Wilson’s greatest ever achievement. Including a host of session musicians, every song on this album works perfectly and has more than stood the test of time, it remains one of the most influencial albums ever made. The tracks have immense beauty and are superbly arranged and produced with magnificently lush orchestral parts and vocal harmonies – this is simply a perfect pop record with Wilson at his creative peak – this was his crowning achievement. This copy on offer is the much rarer original UK stereo version, far harder to find than the mono cut and a very fine copy it is too. Both record and cover are in super condition, the record clearly has avoided any traumas from the vintage equipment of day and plays beautifully with practically nothing to fault, a brave statement I know, but true. This when played on a highly revealing system as can be seen further down. An album of genius and as essential as any record ever could be, most collectors will enjoy this legendary and landmark recording.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): a single format with a laminated front. This covers all the closed edges and ends on three large external rear flipbacks. This is the correct stereo cover with the ST number and stereo logo printed on the back. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd and including the ‘Patents pending’ text. The original promotional inner is also included that has ‘Patents applied for’ text.

Lamination & Front: Very fresh, clear and and shiny with only very mild record rim impression that shows only faint rubbing. Little dulling at all elsewhere and this remains fully adhered with no lifting. Any creasing is minuscule and any surface marks or blemishes ultra faint and very few. This most famous 1960s cover front will prove very difficult to find much better.

Cover Back: If the front looks superb, the back goes a notch further. This unprotected back has hardly aged at all and remains a real white with any toning or grubbiness tiny and merely hints. No rubbing and nigh-on crease-free bar the odd faint hairline on the splendidly solid flipbacks. All three have avoided scuffs, burred ends and no grime-lines on their ends. This 45-year-old cover sets the bar high and simply looks magnificent to the eye.

Top Edge: Unworn, and dead smooth to the fingertip.

Bottom Edge: Practically as above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, quite sharp with no wear or feathering, not the absolute cleanest of manufacturing cuts if being critical, this I have found on most-all of these early-made covers, so basically, this one looks almost as made. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with barely any compression. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and unpeeled laminate. This remains quite white with any toning tiny and small. The ends are gently tapered in manufacture.

Corners: Any tip rubbing is very light and small and excellent shape is retained.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this highly famous, prized and scarcer original stereo cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: MINT(-): the minus being a light trace of crinkle near the top corner (even this being critical on an inner this great age). This one is the black and white EMI promotional inner and guaranteed the one purchased with this record. I rarely ever mix-and-match, I prefer to offer the original item with anything I offer if at all possible. This matches the rest of the set and is in superb condition. Clean, fresh, devoid of any noteworthy creases and highly attractive. Unlined with unsplit edges, these are hard to find this clean and please remember just how old this set is.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): a very fine visual copy that is impressively clean, shiny, intense black and heavily pressed. Any marks are ultra fine and faint surface traces or super-fine hairlines. Those whispy types seen critically under light which I am certain are caused by dry-cloth cleaning – totally harmless but seen with close-up viewing. How many copies of this title or similar aged albums will not have light surface trace marks as the very least? The lack of penetrating scratches or more viewable surface marks is the more important factor. This was a popular album in the UK and most examples got played very heavily and a high percentage these days will be rendered unlistenable by over-use or abuse from those times. This copy looks hardly even played on all the evidence reitterated by supreme sound quality. Visually a super record that should please most collectors again.

I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This undisputed masterpiece plays even above its high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is fantastic with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds barely even registered and no pops or clicks of any note were heard and this is an exceptional clean pressing for a technically complex album. Few original rainbow format copies will outperform this vintage pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played only very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled. Owned from new by one man who owned quality stereo equipment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record and the fine details and stereo imagery will never be bettered by the more ‘modern’ formats. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
