Back before the Beastie Boys evolved into one of hip-hop’s cleverest and most respected outfits, the trio were youngsters rapping about girls and beer to metal riffs on their debut record, Licensed to Ill, the very first hip-hop record to reach #1 on the charts. Later, the Beastie Boys claimed the frat boy inspiring rhymes on this record were a sort of rap persona or satire. Personally, I saw them play the Greek Theatre in L.A. around this period, when their stage show proudly boasted girls in cages, and I didn’t notice the irony, it all seemed very legit and keeping with the traditions of hip-hop, which was sexist from the start, only to become more so. Even listening to the Beastie Boys then, the misogyny stuck out, and didn’t enitrely square with the often smarty-pants rhymes and adroit selection of samples. Producer Rick Rubin melded metal and hip-hop as well as those two seemingly not connected genres were ever entwined. While Check Your Head may be the Beastie Boys’ crowning achievement, no other album by them is as catchy in a kind of dumb, lite-beer-chugging way as Licensed to Ill.
