This auction is for a very rare 1964 stereo 1st press copy of the Beatles 4th LP, Beatles For Sale.
Back in 1964 the stereo format was still very much the underdog. Stereo discs cost more than their mono counterparts and stereophonic record players were still priced up to the point of being a highly expensive luxury. Because of this, the original stereo presses sold in far, far fewer numbers than the mono presses. Only a tiny percentage of the original 1964 1st presses were stereo and, today, are extremely rare and highly collectible!
This sleeve is different than most as it carries an error in the gatefold. Usually, next to the stereo catalogue number, there's a small information box about stereo. On this copy, however, this box is missing.
I'm not sure how rare these are but in my years of collecting this is only the second one I've ever seen, and a search of Popsike doesn't bring anything up to hand immediately. A definite novelty!

The cover is holding up nicely but is showing its age. The front cover has a little laminate rub and some light disc impression. There's some sort of residue down the spine edge and some cellotape at the top - this residue is also on the spine and a little on the back cover, so I can only assume that someone originially put tape on the spine to protect it, and that this tape has since come away and left some residue and marks. This is just an educated guess, though. Daniel Fagnefor (Sorry if I spelt that wrong, Daniel!) has been written just above the 'Stereo' mark on the top right cover, but is very faded and quite hard to spot. Top seam looks to have started to split a little in the middle, but overall is holding tightly. Bottom seam is holding fine. Right seam is holding fine. Spine has the residue on it but is holding fine, albeit looking pretty fuzzy. The back cover, jkust like the front, has the light laminate rubbing and disc impression. The residue is down the right side and there are two light patches at the top and bottom - not sure what might have caused these. Inner gatefold is clean with a little rubbing in places. There's tape at the top and bottom of the opening on the right hand side and a name or something has been tippexed out on the bottom overflap at the left. Overall, not too bad, but showing its age. The playing surface has a nice, sharp shine to it but has a fair amount of light scuffs all over the playing surface. Nothing at all heavy or serious, though.

The labels have lovely bright, silver text but has a fair amount of light spindlewear and a little whitening around the centrehole. Very decent labels!

All records have been visually graded under a strong, 125W natural light desk lamp.
