This auction is for a very rare, original Mono 1st pressing of the Beatles legendary LP 'The Beatles', otherwise known as the White Album.
This copy has the very low number of 0021442 on the cover! It's very hard to find a number this low! Both discs are also missing the 'An EMI Recording' text on the labels, which is only missing on very early presses of this album!
Comes complete with it's original black inners, poster and four photos! Please note however that the George photo is different from the others and looks like it's either from a later / foreign pressing, or one that has been printed out at home to complete the set. The remaining three photos are genuine, though.
This was the last original Beatles' album to have a full mono mix (Yellow Submarine was just a stereo fold-down into mono). Subsequantly most of the tracks have both subtle and blatant differences to their stereo counterparts. A website that details some of these differences can be found HERE.
By 1968 mono was pretty much a dead format. Stereo records coming down in price to be the same as their mono counterparts along with the price of stereo record players drastically dropping meant that everybody bought stereo and the mono copies were left on the shelf. Mono sales dropped so much that by 1969 it was discontinued completely as a format across all labels. Because of this, stereo copies of this album far outsold the mono copies!
...
The cover is holding up nicely but is showing its age with some light, general wear and tear. The cover as a whole has creamed a little (The Cream Album?) and has a little rubbing and laminate wear with some light disc impression on both the front and back. On the front there's some wear down the spine edge. The bottom seam on the back half of the cover has split in the middle about 2 inches, but the other seam is holding perfect along with both side seams. The spine has creased and folded with the laminate getting brittle and breaking up a little all the way down. Inside is pretty clean with a little a little browning down the middle and some light marks here and there. Someone had written in the sides for the songs down the left of the tracks with several songs underlined and arrowed, but the pencil markings have long gone and just left a mark on the laminate. Overall, though, this very rare, early cover isn't looking too bad! Inner Sleeves : FAIR/GOOD
Both original sugar paper black inner sleeves are included. Both are holding okay with a fair amount of creasing in the corners and whathaveyou, and one of the sleeves has splits in the middle of the seams. Check out the photos above. Not looking too bad, but due to their fragile nature they are showing some damage. Poster : VG+
The poster is holding up okay with some light age spots and some fraying on the edges. A couple of the seams have begun to split a little on the edges of the seams but, overall, the poster is looking pretty good! Photos : GOOD
All four photos are looking okay. The George photo looks to be a home printout done to complete the set but the other three photos are original to the record's release. They're looking good but have some light creasing. They're graded down as a previous owner appears to have glued or taped them somewhere in the past which has left some small tear marks and glue remnants on the back. Not looking too bad, though, and complete the set. Disc 1 (Visually Graded Only!!) : GOOD+
The playing surface has a pretty good shine to it and has a fair amount of light scuffing along with some slightly heavier looking scuffs and marks in places.
.
Disc 2, again, has a pretty nice shine and has a fair amount of light scuffing along with some slightly heavier looking marks, including a small surface scratch on side 4 that's about an inch long at the 7 o'clock position that's just about feelable under the fingernail. Disc 1 Labels : VG+
The labels are pretty clean and have a decent colour. Both have a moderate amount of light spindlewear and "LP 00 0020" has been written in small characters on the side 2 label.
.
Again, the labels are looking pretty clean with a good colour. Both have a fair amount of light, moderate spindlewear and a touch of whitening around the centrehole. On the side 4 label some has written "LP 00 0021" in small characters. Terms and Conditions + Shipping Information
