THE BEATLES:
FROM ME TO YOU/THANK YOU GIRL (Vee Jay 522, 1st pressing, 1963): VG, writing on A-side label.
Eminently decent copy of The Beatles' 2nd single, released May 27, 1963. This guaranteed genuine rarity is a solid VG, without any deep scratches. It has writing in 2 places on the color-band: the name "Poggi" at 9 o'clock, and the number "42" at 12 o'clock; both are very faint (see photos). The B-side label is clean.
VJ 498 gets all the attention as the first Beatles 45 released in the U.S. (in February 1963). Collectors like The First anything, and adding to the interest, Chicago boneheads at VJ spelled it "Beattles" on original pressings. Beatles experts Cox and Spizer, authors of the definitive catalog of U.S. Fabs vinyl, even named their publisher "498 Publishing"!
But THIS 45, VJ 522, is easily as rare as #498! It was released 3 months later in '63, and was the 2nd try at breaking Our Heroes into the land of the red, white, and blue. Please Please Me had bombed in February, but it was thought that just maybe From Me To You could fare better; it had raced to the top of the UK pop chart, and Brit teens were getting VERY excited about The Boys.
But not U.S. teens. In fact, few radio stations bothered to play it, and sales were just as bad, or worse, than those of #498. In fact, their third try four months later, with She Loves You on the (white) Swan label, also flopped, although they got a little airplay this time, mainly in Philly and L.A.
The result, for collectors, is three 1963 singles that are very hard to find in any condition, and their prices reflect it. Vee Jay 522 books at around $1000 in near mint; this nice VG copy is, we trust, reasonably priced for the condition, and we don't expect it to be in our store for long. Don't miss it; one copy only!
