In 1962 Parlophone first issued Love Me Do in the UK. Shortly after, a furtive 45 released on U.S. Decca vanished without a trace, & that was the end of it for uninterested Americans.
Until Beatlemania, that is. In 1964 MGM purchased the rights to Love Me Do & issued this 45: a 3-year-old recording of a non-Beatles lead singer warbling an ancient tune. No matter...the single had the magic name & made #26 on Billboard's Hot 100 during that Beatle-mad Spring.
