The BEATLES - A HARD DAY'S NIGHT

A nice condition and very presentable copy of this increasingly hard to find and sought after 1964 UK very 1st press Beatles classic, on the yellow & black Parlophone label, MONO, PMC 1230

The dead wax matrix numbers are :

Side 1    XEX 481 - 3N  with stampers "1" and "A G" at 9.30 o'clock and 3.30 o'clock respectively 

Side 2    XEX 482 - 3N  with stampers "5" and "O P" at 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock respectively

GRADINGS :

RECORD (Visual Grade / Condition Grade) :  Very Good plus (VG+) / Very Good plus (VG+)  Completely flat and heavy vinyl with lovely jet black sheen on both sides. Glossy in normal daylight and only with close scrutiny under a bright light do some fine hairlines and a few small and faint scuff marks come into view on each side - nothing feelable and all appearing to be superficial. There are x3 hairlines and a single 7mm scuff line (at the end of A7) on side 1, and a 1cm hairline on B3 which are all slightly more obvious but even these are non-feelable and do not appear to impinge upon the impressive audio quality at all.

LABELS : Excellent (EX) for both sides, with all of the silver writing and Parlophone logo upon the smooth black background perfectly intact, and just a few very faint spindle trails on each label. Note the "K" and "T" embossed tax codes on the side 1 label along with the "SOLD IN U.K...." and "RECORDING FIRST PUBLISHED..." texts on each label, all of which are UK 1st pressing identifiers.

OUTER SLEEVE : Very Good (VG) : Ernest J. Day front side laminated with reverse side flipbacks, with no cardboard creasing, firm edges with no edge scuffing; corners remain nicely defined right angles with minor rubbing only, though there is just a little compression on the bottom left corner; x2 5mm horizontal surface creases adjacent and perpendicular to spine with a 2cm laminate line lift but not impinging upon the spine text which is perfectly intact and the spine itself remains rigid. There are also a number of small (1cm or less) vertical laminate creases adjacent and perpendicular to the bottom edge. Opening edges are firm with no fraying and the reverse side is in impressive condition with the flipbacks in excellent shape except for some flipback creasing at the bottom right corner, and just a little age discolouration towards the opening edge. Lovely art work, photos and text all perfectly intact with all colours still rich and well defined and no unwanted writing or doodles. A solid very good.

INNER SLEEVE : Original "USE EMITEX" and "MADE IN ENGLAND" poly-lined, die-cut inner sleeve with no rips or tears but there is a 4cm seam split in the middle of the right edge, and some mild creasing at the bottom corners; nevertheless still remaining fully functional. NOTE that I will place the record into a plain white inner sleeve (and separate from the outer sleeve) in order to protect the original inner sleeve during posting.

AUDIO QUALITY :  Excellent (EX). Impressive MONO tone and clarity throughout. No skips, sticks, repeats, or jumps, just x2 very mild background clicks on side 1 (A3 and A5) and barely any background interference/crackle at all....even the interludes are silent. Nothing to detract from every track on this wonderful LP still making for a great listen.

In summary a nice condition and highly presentable copy of this increasingly hard to find 1964 UK 1st press Beatles classic, with the audio quality being the real highlight - a "must" for any serious Beatles vinyl collection, and only continuing to gain in value.

On the subject of postage, I take great care in the packaging of all items, using a proper vinyl thick cardboard "crucifix" style mailer along with at least two thick cardboard stiffeners. I take great care in separating the record from the outer sleeve in order to help prevent sleeve damage in transit and I always insert the vinyl, outer sleeve and inner into a clear plastic sleeve, thus adding further protection.

Mint

The records itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The cover and any extra items, such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in perfect condition. Records advertised as Sealed or Unplayed should be Mint.

Excellent

The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and /or creasing.

Very Good

The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.

Good

The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discolouration, etc.

Fair

The record is still just playable but has not been cared for properly and displays considerable surface noise; it may even jump. The cover and contents are torn, stained and/or defaced

Poor

The record will not play properly due to scratches, bad surface noise, etc. The cover and contents are badly damaged or partly missing.

Bad

The record is unplayable or might even be broken, and is only of use as a collection-filler
