THE BEATLES - A HARD DAY'S NIGHT

An increasingly rare (especially in this condition) and sought after copy of this 1964 UK MONO 1st pressing on the UK PARLOPHONE label, MONO, PMC 1230

The dead wax matrix numbers are :

Side 1  XEX 481 - 3N  with stampers "3" and "G LR" at 9.30 o'clock and 3.30 o'clock respectively

Side 2  XEX 482 - 3N  with stampers "2" and "G LT" at 8.30 o'clock and 2.30 o'clock respectively

Note the "-3N/-3N" matrix endings, each indicative of a very first UK pressing (there were no matrix numbers ending in either "-1N" or "-2N").

The appearance of the vinyl is EXCELLENT (at least). The heavy duty vinyl is flat and each side has retained virtually all of it's original beautiful glossy sheen. In normal daylight each side of the vinyl comes across as near perfect and it's only under a bright light that just a few small wispy hairlines come into view but even these are purely superficial - there is certainly nothing "feelable" and the outstanding audio quality confirms this. Wonderful condition with jet black lacquer still fully intact - remarkable, and rare, for a 54 year old classic such as this.

The labels are excellent. Beautiful matt black background with silver text and the yellow "PARLOPHONE text and logo all as rich and clear as the day this record was bought! There are a few  spindle trail traces on each label adjacent to the centre hole and just a little bit of wear around the holes themselves. The "K" and "T" tax codes sit proud and are clearly visible on the side 1 label. Note the presence of "THE PARLOPHONE CO. LTD...." text on the perimeter of the label, the "SOLD IN THE U.K. SUBJECT TO..." text across each label, the "RECORDING FIRST PUBLISHED..." text, and the "NORTHERN SONGS" credit each of which are indicative of a very first pressing. 

The front-laminated Ernest J. Day outer sleeve is in very good (at least) condition. All edges remain firm with barely any scuffing at all though there are four small "nicks" on the bottom edge and a 7mm scuff on the top edge. Similarly the spine is firm with all writing perfectly legible and just two small "nicks" and an 8mm scuff towards the top end of the spine. The corners remain nicely defined right angles with just a little rubbing on each corner. The photos and colouring on the front side remain nicely intact with rich colouring still but there is some sporadic vertical light laminate lifting adjacent to the spine and a number of 1cm light laminate creases adjacent and perpendicular to the bottom edge and again adjacent to the spine. The reverse side is VG+ with all flipbacks excellent and remaining fully functional and there is no unwanted writing or doodling and no ring wear. Overall I would grade the condition of the outer sleeve as a solid very good.

Finally, the quality of the audio is excellent+. Hard to fault in fact, with superb MONO tone and clarity, even on the higher frequencies and at higher volume. No skips, no clicks, no pops, no background crackle...just wonderful MONO audio quality throughout. Brilliant!

Comes complete with original die-cut "USE EMITEX" tracing paper lined inner which has no tears or splits and remains fully functional and in remarkably excellent overall condition. Note that I always post the record(s) in a new plain white inner sleeve(s) in order to protect the original(s).

In summary a definite VG+ copy of this increasingly rare and sought after 1964 UK 1st MONO pressing Beatles classic, with the highlight being the lovely condition of the vinyl itself and the wonderful quality of the MONO audio.  A "must" for any serious Beatles vinyl collection and only continuing to gain in value.

I take great care in separating the record from the outer sleeve in order to help prevent sleeve damage in transit and I always insert the vinyl, outer sleeve and inner into a clear plastic sleeve, thus adding further protection.

Mint

The records itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The cover and any extra items, such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in perfect condition. Records advertised as Sealed or Unplayed should be Mint.

Excellent

The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and /or creasing.

Very Good

The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.

Good

The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discolouration, etc.

Fair

The record is still just playable but has not been cared for properly and displays considerable surface noise; it may even jump. The cover and contents are torn, stained and/or defaced

Poor

The record will not play properly due to scratches, bad surface noise, etc. The cover and contents are badly damaged or partly missing.

Bad

The record is unplayable or might even be broken, and is only of use as a collection-filler
