WHAT IS A TEST PRESSING?
When record companies manufacture vinyl records, they invariably produce a ‘test’ pressing to ensure that there have been no errors in reproducing the vinyl disk from the master tapes. Also, to ensure that the artist and/or producer is happy with the final mix. Test pressings are produced in very small numbers (usually between 5 and 10) with copies going to the artist, the producer, sound engineer and possibly an expert (e.g. a DJ) for comments. Most Test Pressings are destroyed after they have fulfilled their function. However, a few filter through to collectors - usually given to fans by either the artist or possibly via an expert who has been asked to comment on the Test Pressing. It is because of their rarity value that many record collectors actively seek out Test Pressings and/or Promotional records. Test pressings do not have regular ‘printed’ labels. This would cost too much to produce for small-run test pressings. The information on the labels is invariably hand written or non-existent. The most common colour for test pressing labels is white but on rare occasions black label test pressings are made. This particular test pressing must have been deemed acceptable as it was subsequently used as a promotional item with white promo paper labels stuck over the test pressing labels.
Labels: When I purchased this LP, both sides had white EMI promotional labels stuck on each side. On one side the promo label was torn and I could see that underneath it was the original black ‘test pressing’ label. The other label was complete (see final scan) so I removed that one in order to expose the black ‘test pressing’ label underneath. Some of the sticker glue residue from the promotional labels proved difficult to remove from the run-out grooves (see scans) but this does not affect play in any way as the stylus arm lifts before reaching that area.
Record: Play tested. No skips or jumps. Plays VG+.
Cover: Gatefold cover. No writings or doodles. Excellent condition - see photos.
Inner Sleeve: Excellent - see photos.
