Cleaning out my collection/stock and here is the story behind these tapes- back in the 1980's when we had more-or-less state of the art open reel technology in the radio station (Revox decks, 15 ips, parametric equalizers) an acquaintance brought in a Beatles 8 track bootleg- "Get Back". There were 10 songs, some with different titles than eventually released. The project was to playback the 8track, record it onto open reel (and cassette) and return it to the owner with those copies ( I could keep copies too). I had a few days to work with it. I found a couple 8 Track decks and chose the one that was easiest to adjust the heads for maximum alignment (crisp high-end etc). There was a speed issue in that the playback was too fast (vocals sounded a couple octaves too high!!), so I put a variable 12 volt power supply on the 8-track deck motor. I'm a Beatles fan (that was another reason it was brought to me..) and I brought the speed down to where everyone sounded correct (the Let it Be movie has been playing on Showtime and I had a VHS recording (from 1979!) to reference). The 8 Track was a recording off of an LP, but very well done. The LP was STEREO and these songs are some of the Glyn Johns mixes. A few were on Anthology many years later, but there are some unique to this LP/8-Track. The 8 track label (which I copied on the Zerox and is included in each of the 4 boxes) was done "professionally" that is; manufactured. After making a couple direct to reel safety copies, I ran the playback through the Orban parametric EQ and filtered what I labeled "hard" and "soft" (mainly defined for tape hiss from the 8track- the softer eq will be the ones closest to "flat" and also varied the playback speed; "faster" and "slower" and recorded at both 7 1/2 ips and 15, just to give myself a few variables. So, there are;
7.5 ips tape faster hard eq
7.5 ips tape slower soft eq
15 ips tape faster hard eq
15 ips tape slower soft eq
all on ex-Drake Chenault reels, tails-out I believe. I DID thread one of these up within the last 10 years while refurishing a Revox A77 to sell and it sounded fine. A Stereo LP really wasn't all so bad...
Having said all that, these are fine items for other reel to reel enthusiasts; not warped, full reels etc.
All tape is; 1/4" 1 mil (or 1980's radio automation standard- not the very thin .5 mil flimsy stuff Radio Shack used to get 3600 feet on a 7" reel)
I have other 10" open reels on auction along with this posting. Win more and combine ship at little or nothing more postage.
