BEATLES ‘REVOLVER’ XEX 606-1 RARE REMIX 11 OF TOMORROW NEVER KNOWS YELLOW/BLACK PARLOPHONE 1966 LP
This is already a very rare item, XEX 606-1 with the remix of ‘the first’ psychedelic, pop song, Tomorrow Never Knows’, a hard enough find for any Beatles’ collector.
What is not so commonly advertised by sellers when they do turn up is the rarity of the genuine, very first pressing of this already very rare version. The copy offered for auction here is one such, genuinely, very first and hence, much rarer than most, so called, first pressings.
Mono 1st Label, Variation A, Very first pressing.
This is how the labels first appeared on the shelves. Using the sans serif Arial typeset, these early labels misprint the side 2 track Doctor Robert as "Dr. Robert", something that John Lennon allegedly wasn't happy with. These early sans serif labels have each song title starting on a new line with the first line purely for Taxman and have Eleanor Rigby starting on the second line down. Also something to note on these original labels is that each song title was followed by song credits and then lead vocalist.
XEX 606-1 Remix 11 of ‘Tomorrow Never Knows’
When "Revolver" was initially mixed a different master for Tomorrow Never Knows was sent off to be pressed. This mix is known as 'Remix 11'. Although subtle, it is different to the standard 'Remix 9' which was ultimately to replace it. The story goes that each group member was given the first copies from the production line and John went to listen to it. But, it turned out that he was unhappy with the mix or that the wrong one had been used and he informed George Martin. Production was then stopped as the new masters were cut and the pressing plates were replaced. This story has never been verified though... These first presses have a side 2 matrix number of XEX 606-1 whereas the standard presses have XEX 606-2 and beyond.
Tomorrow Never Knows Remix 11
This version of the song is believed to have been included on the album on only the first day of UK pressing. This version on this pressing is mono remix 11 while the standard version is remix 8. In this rare version, the vocal is louder and clearer over the effects, the fade is slightly longer and has more piano, and the effects are faded up quite differently whereas later versions are quite similar.
Sleeve condition: Excellent, no marks, creases, writing or blemishes. Nice, flat spine with fully legible title.
Record condition: VG, no damage in the form of groove penetrating scratches or scuffs, so no clicking or jumping whatever, but well-played with light, whispy marks. Plays fine in accordance with grade.
Please be familiar with The Record Collector Price Guide condition criteria which I use meticulously for all my record grading.
