Description
John Lennon - "Sings the Great Rock and Roll Hits - Roots." Record Label - Adam VIII. Catalog Number "A8018" Stereo.
This is a highly unusual, unauthorized, and sought-after John Lennon vinyl record. Why?
Because it was only briefly advertised and sold on USA TV in early February, 1975. Only about 3,000 were released.
This all had to do with a lawsuit John Lennon eventually won against Morris Levy who quickly pressed these LP's.
Morris Levy was sent a legal "Cease and Desist" order so he had limited time to make these.
John was then prompted to rush release his "Rock-and-Roll" Album on February 17, 1975.
Vinyl: This is glossy, shiny and "like new." One spindle line per label. Grade Mint-.
LP Cover: In "as new condition." Two corners are ever so slightly creased. Grade Ex+.
Inner Sleeve: This is the original paper sleeve with just a small split and no rips or tears.
This "Roots" album was heavily bootlegged. Beware. Distinguishing between a real one and a fake can be tricky.
Below are the key items that prove this is an an authentic LP and not a fake, in descending order of importance:
LP COVER
1. The Spine reads "Great" (not greatest).
2. You can see John's shoulder in the lower-right corner (most counterfeits lose the shoulder).
3. Cover construction is poster-board not brown cardboard (looks light grey on inside cover).
4. Printing is clear and decent (though not top-quality).
5. Spelling is accurate (e.g. "stereo" not "estero")
VINYL RECORD
1. Orange record labels and average weight vinyl.
2. Normal size orange record labels.
3. Catalog # "A8018" hand etched into the trail-off or dead wax area.
4. "Bell Sound" stamped into the trail-off or dead wax area.
This is the great quality pressing plant where this was made.
5. "Joe" is hand etched into the trail-off area or dead wax area.
He mastered the tapes onto the A and B side pressing plates.
