THE LONG AND WINDING ROAD/FOR YOU BLUE (Apple #2611 Japanese pressing with "fold-over" PICTURE SLEEVE): Clean M- 45 & clean VG+ picture sleeve.
Another big hit for Paul, released shortly after The Split in 1970. Recorded during the rancorous Let It Be sessions; George, John and Yoko snickered behind McCartney's back about "the long and boring song". One might be tempted to think that Paul had the last laugh, since it was their final #1 hit; but he was not at all pleased with the released recording. The Let It Be tapes languished on the shelf for over a year (nobody wanted anything to do with them, since the 1969 sessions had been so toxic). Then Phil Spector got his hands on them.
Big Phil worked his production "magic" on the hundreds of hours of tape; The Beatles moved on to record and release Abbey Road in the meantime.
Spector gave the songs his trademark wall-of-sound treatment, with lush strings and, most offensively to Paul, female choruses (women singers were virtually never heard on Beatles recordings). Since McCartney had been given no say in the process, he threatened to sue. By this time the LP had been released and the damage (if that's the correct word for a #1 smash LP with two #1 singles, this one and the title tune, both written by McCartney) had been done. The Fabs lawyered up and played "Here Comes The Lawsuit".
The flip side is a George Harrison song, originally entitled Sweet And Lovely Girl, about then-wife Pattie Boyd Harrison (from the soon-to-be-released compilation Songs George And Paul Wrote About Their Exes)...
