Description

The Beatles “Please Please Me" 1st UK Press Mono Vinyl LP

Description:

Rare chance to own a fantastic collectors piece - a 1st press 'Gold' label Beatles - Please Please Me in its original 'Gold' 1st version sleeve signed by the Art Director and surrealist photographer Angus McBean hired by EMI for the iconic 'EMI stairwell' shoot. Signed before 1990. This is of course also a rarity without the signature as a 1st press Black & Gold label press - with all Dick James label credit errors on both sides - proving its status as a very 1st press, also with very low mothers (1st on both sides) and very low stampers (single character on side B) making this one of the very first discs to come of the press on day one of, March 22nd 1963.

Key Features:

Signed: Signed by original art director and photographer of the famous 'EMI stairwell shoot' Angus McBean (8 June 1904 – 9 June 1990)

  • Matrix: Side 1: XEX 421-1N; Side 2: XEX 422-1N.
  • Labels: The first pressing has a black label with gold print and “Parlophone Co. Ltd” printed at the start perimeter print. “Dick James Mus. Co” incorrect publishing credit for “I Saw Her Standing There”, “Misery”, “Do You Want To Know A Secret” & “There’s A Place”. With or without tax code and with 33 1/3 on the label.
  • Sleeve: The first pressing ‘Gold’ sleeve is an Ernest J.Day & Co. front laminated cover, with large “mono“ on front. The photo credit for the front cover: “Photo Angus McBean” is printed in the lower right corner. The text starts at the end of “s” in “songs”.
  • Inner: Polythene-lined “Use Emitex” die-cut inner sleeve.
  • Stampers: 1GR & 1T (1st Mother both sides, single digit stamper side 2)
  • Tax Code: T Side 1

Visual Grade: VERY GOOD PLUS!

In good natural light the record exhibits a glossy and clean appearance with some light surface marks visible and under strong direct halogen spotlight the disc retains its glossy sheen and displays additional short hairlines on both sides. Overall a very nice example of a very rare and sought-after record in such condition.

Audio Grade: VERY GOOD PLUS!

It sounds fantastic, great channel separation, crisp vocals and punchy bass from the famous deep-cut early Parlophone pressings. Light background crackle at the lead-in to each side which subsides once the tracks start. Otherwise only the occasional very light static in some quiet passages and the occasional light pop which do not distract from the overall intensity and presence of one of the most iconic performances ever recorded. Fantastic!

Sleeve: VERY GOOD!

The laminate front retain its original glossy sheen without ring wear, some wear lines creeping in from the edges, fully readable spine, the back shows light discolouration and storage wear, all flip-backs are in place and no splitting or tape.

Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT PLUS!

The original poly-lined EMITEX inner sleeve is in excellent condition, clean and without any splits.
