Description

Artist: The Beatles

Title: Please Please Me

Format: 12" LP album

Catalog #: Parlophone PMCO-1202

Up for auction is the 12" vinyl LP Please Please Me, the maiden LP release from the one and only Beatles.

What we have here is the Australian mono release PCMO-1202 on the black & gold Parlophone label which began production in Australia in late 1963. Production of this label style ceased in early 1964. The numbers stamped in the trail-off area are XEX 421-1N & XEX 422-1N respectively.

The vinyl has seen better days, but WOW does it sound great! Surprisingly good in fact for its age. If you want perfect sound reproduction then you've got the recent mono remasters. But this is how Beatles music was meant to sound! Punchy, bright and in mono, baby! What's a little crackle between friends?

What's odd about the sleeve is that it has both mono and stereo catalog numbers, which logic tells me should not be the case if this was the original sleeve for this mono disc from 1963, prior to the production of stereo LPs on Parlophone in Australia … as far as I know. But then both disc and sleeve have the same name printed on them, which suggests that they go together. Perhaps this can be explained by leftover 1963 discs being packaged in 1964 sleeves. Who knows?

See pictures below.

These early Aussie Beatles pressings are getting harder to find these days. Grab this tasty Beatles album now while you have the chance!

I am currently selling off a bunch of early Aussie Beatles releases, spare copies and leftovers from my collection. Check my other auctions - I'm always more than happy to combine postage.

Will ship worldwide - international bidders please contact me for postage details. Any questions please ask.

Condition

The vinyl is in fair-good condition, based on close inspection under natural light. The vinyl does retain some shine but has numerous moderate dings and scratches, as you generally expect from a disc nearly 50 years of age. Having said that, it's certainly not trashed as many early Beatles I've seen. This would definitely be a passable first copy of this title for any Beatles fan or collector.

The record sleeve has seen better days, like many Beatles sleeves from the early 1960s. There are two large tears on the front which have been "repaired" using tape. I have not attempted to remove the tape. The bottom of the sleeve is split along 2/3 of its length. Front and back display ringwear and creasing. The sleeve has discolouration from age and general wear. There is writing on the both the front and back. The spine is partially split and the titles and catalog are barely visible due to spine wear. This was my first copy of this LP, superseded by one in better condition. It would certainly be OK to fill a gap in any Beatles collection, given the rarity and cost associated with finding copies in excellent or better condition.

See pictures below for close-ups of the sleeve.

The labels have someone's name written in pencil - it may be possible to remove this, I haven't tried. Otherwise both labels are actually in nice condition, shiny with bright gold printing, certainly brighter than the other copies of this LP I have seen which can sometimes appear quite dull. Apart from some spindle marks there are no tears, stamps, stickers etc on the labels.
